Dear Westport Chess Club fam,

Happy Holidays!!

This year has been a memorable journey on the 64 squares for our club. Your participation, enthusiasm, and patience (remember that night we brought tournaments back?) have made this year exceptional. We are grateful for your continued support and engagement in our little chess community.

As we look forward to 2024, we're excited about the opportunities to meet, play, and grow together in this game we all love. May your holidays be filled with joy, peace, and maybe even a few winning strategies!

We at the Westport Chess Club wish you and your family and friends good health, prosperity, and happiness in the new year! May 2023 be better than your endgame--I mean my endgame! (With a bad joke to start the year, it's nothing but UP for you.)

Don't forget, we have an in-person, over the board tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 3rd @ 7:30! Registration starts at 6:30. See you at the Flea!

An over the board tournament?? Whaaat?! Yep! You heard that correctly. We are having our first in-person tournament since the start of the pandemic! Can you join us?

Where: Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill, Kansas City, MO

When: Tuesday, Jan. 3rd, 2023 @ 7:30 p.m. Please show up early to get registered.

Registration: In-person, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Time control: Four rounds of G/10. Each player has 10 minutes to make all of their moves. (If you are ahead, but you run out of time, you lose.) The tournament should take 80 minutes to complete.

Cost: $5 entry fee. Cash only.

Prizes: Each win will get you $2.50, and a draw will net you $1.25. For losses, you get a "good game" from the person across the board.

Rated? No. This is not a USCF-sanctioned event. Many folks let their USCF memberships expire during COVID, so this tournament is just for fun!

NOTE: To make pairings easier, we need to have an idea of your rating. If you know your rating--or have a good guess at it--that's great. If not, no worries! And if you need to use your Chess.com rating, that is totally fine, but let us know it's your Chess.com rating. Thanks.

Finally: If you have a chess clock, you probably want to bring it. We have clocks, but they're analog. We will supply the board, the pieces, and the tournament director. If you don't like our clocks, and you have a smartphone, you can download an app called "Chess Clock by Chess.com". It's free and simple to use.

Don't let kitchen disasters, rude relatives, late guests, failed apple pies, or a shortage of wine get you down. Like Bob Marley says, don't worry 'bout a thing. You're alive, and we think you're awesome--thank you for making our little club special!
