Small Business Saturday falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. In the age of online shopping, it’s easy to skip over the mom-and-pop shop for the big box store or online retailer. This is what your local shops provide to your community:

Convenience:
Unless you live in a major metropolitan area, chances are that the closest stores to your home are small businesses. Nearly wherever you are, they're close enough that you can just run up the block to reach them.

They try harder:
Local stores are more likely to make sure you leave happy, and might even make an effort to keep your favorite items in stock.

Get to know the neighborhood:
Un-like big corporations, each small business will be different from the next. Getting to know your local small businesses can be a great way to get to know your neighborhood and community!

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY STATISTICS

• 99% of all U.S. businesses are small businesses

• 64% of new jobs created in the U.S. between 1993 and 2020 were from small businesses

• Small businesses donate 250% more to non-profits and community causes and that money stays in your local area!

Support your community businesses this holiday season. Shop Local!

Shop Local – Small Business Marketing Tips for the Holidays

Small Business Saturday falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving; November 28, 2020. In the age of online shopping, it’s easy for consumers to skip over the mom-and-pop shop for the big box store or online retailer. Partnering with your fellow neighborhood shops can increase your holiday sales.

Look for other local businesses in complementary industries that share a target audience with you. For brick-and-mortar businesses, this would probably mean sticking to other businesses nearby.
Partnerships and collaborations can be flexible. Different strategies you could use include:

• Setting up a referral program where you send each other clients.

• Offering package deals together, this is a great idea for holiday gift giving!

• Going in together on prizes for a social media contest, with each business contributing an equal share to make the prize more valuable.

• Partnering on advertising expenses for an event or local shopping area.

Shall We Dance?

Your marketing consultant should be like a great dance partner. Two people gliding across the floor. If you’re doing it right it looks effortless, beautiful, but it takes work from both partners.

Business owners are well, busy. And sometimes, marketing is an afterthought. You need to find the right partner to lead you. It takes two to tango, right?

People are often eager to “go solo” and attempt to work on their marketing during times when their business is slow. Only then does it seem like a good time to focus on finding more clients, getting your brand out there. But here are some harsh truths:

It’s never going to “slow down” enough for you to have the time. If it does, it’s probably too late. Your slow time has become the lack of customers that will close your business. Instead of waiting “until tomorrow” or “until next week” or “until I have time,” you’re just going to have to start marketing.

You need a marketing partner if:
•You come into your office in the morning with the intention of posting on social media only to realize eight hours later you haven’t done it.

•Your sales team keeps asking for new brochures. They’ve been on your desk for three weeks, waiting for your final approval.

•Your website and/or logo needed to be recreated three years ago. You should get around to that one of these days …

•You’re not sure what PPC or SEO means, but you have the vague feeling you should do something about that.

•You’re doing some advertising here and there, but it all feels disconnected, like several pieces from different puzzles.

Of course, we think you should hire us to help, BUT only if you’re ready to commit to marketing. Yes, we can help with just about all of your marketing, but we still need your participation. We’ll be happy to lead, but you need to communicate with us every step along the way and offer input from the front lines. Ready to stop saying “I’m too busy”? Contact us and find out how. Let’s dance.

Let Me Entertain You – Booking Music for Your Venue

What draws customers to your venue? Entertainment! If you need entertainment to enhance the atmosphere of your venue, it can be a challenge. Nothing can bring people together like some killer music or an interesting event. But where do you start? It can be the easy option to just go with the first act you stumble across, yet choosing the entertainment can be the difference between a good event and a great one. The band, DJ, or performer you hire can be the difference between guests looking for an excuse to leave early and calls for an encore from a dance floor that doesn’t want the night to end.

By being aware of your venue size as well as your budget, you are sure to find kick-ass entertainment that complements every moment. Here are some tips for booking entertainment to keep your guests chill and having a blast.

Consider who will be attending your event – their ages, tastes, and expectations – and make sure you’re not alienating anyone with your choice of act. For a younger crowd a DJ or dance band may be more appropriate, while an older crowd may prefer some classic rock tunes at a decibel level where conversation is still possible.

Book small – If Ed Sheeran can enrapture a stadium audience with just a guitar and a loop pedal, does your event need a 10-piece band to keep your audience entertained? The fewer performers you hire, the lower the amount you’ll pay. You could even ask whether a band that’s taken your fancy would be willing to reduce their line-up to meet your budget. Many larger bands also offer a smaller set up such as an acoustic duo or trio as well.

Speaking of budget, make sure you have one and stick to it! You want to provide quality entertainment to your guests but you also need to make a profit. Rates can be negotiated. If a new performer is looking to build an audience, they may give you a reduced rate in exchange for the exposure he/she/they will get by playing your venue. Also, an entertainer may be a nice person, or even a friend, but it doesn’t mean they are a great entertainer. Keep records of your attendance and sales for each event. If you are not seeing a great ROI, the performer is not a good fit for your venue.

The Nike swoosh, McDonald’s golden arches, the Olympic rings. A logo is usually the first point of contact for most potential consumers and is a key part of any business’s branding. In order to attach a visual identity to a business and brand, a logo is a must. So what makes a good logo?

Visualize someone else's logo, one that's stuck with you for years. You know that whenever you see it, you automatically think of that car, restaurant or sports team. What about it first grabbed you? Why is it appropriate to the product? The mission of your logo is to portray the personality and identity of your company. Another key aspect of a good logo is that it is memorable, even from the first time you see it. Logos that are easy to remember and produce a strong impact are valuable because they help your brand stick in consumers’ minds.

Even the best-looking logos are not necessarily good if they become unrecognizable when you shrink them for packaging or become distorted when you put them on a billboard. For example, a logo you can only use in one size limits the ways you can market your brand. Creating a logo that can be resized, printed, or placed on different media makes your brand significantly more visible. Opt for a simple design that will instantly make your logo more versatile. Having too many lines, elements, or colors can create a complicated design that will scale poorly. Focus on saying more with less.

08/05/2020

No business (particularly a small one) can be all things to all people. Creating a niche, or defining your target market, is the key to success even for large companies. Finding a niche isn’t like finding a needle in a haystack, it’s being specific about identifying the geographic and demographic range of businesses or customers you want your business to target. KIA and Ferrari are both car companies, but they have very different niches: KIA is more likely to draw bargain-minded shoppers, while Ferrari appeals to high-end consumers.

Many new businesses make the mistake of falling into the trap of trying to do too many things at once to make everyone happy, but you can’t be all things to all people. Your niche isn't the same as the field in which you work. For example, a restaurant business is not a niche but a field. A more specific niche may be sushi bar, or Italian cuisine.

A successful business plan is to clarify what you want to sell, remembering that you can’t be all things to all people. Define your target market, with whom do you want to do business? The best way to do this is to talk to prospective customers and identify their needs or wants. Once you find your niche, only do what you do, and do it well.

Now it’s time to test-market your idea. Give people an opportunity to buy your product or service by offering samples, such as a free mini-seminar or a sample of your wares. The initial market test shouldn’t cost you a lot of money, (if it does, you’re doing it wrong!) and will provide valuable information on what works and doesn’t work for your business.

Social media is one of the best ways to connect with people who already love your brand. It’s also important for reaching those who haven’t heard of your business yet. Nearly 75% of American adults use social media every day, making it a critical part of any business strategy. Getting started with social media doesn’t have to be scary or expensive. Social tools are easy to use and you can get started with organic posts for free (yes, for free!)

When people engage with your organic content it’s a great idea to engage back. This helps to build a loyal following. As fans share and like your content, you rise in the social algorithms and gain new, free, exposure. You also nurture relationships that can reach new markets, build brand awareness and develop into sales over time.

Everyone’s affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but we know that many small businesses are feeling particularly vulnerable right now. It’s important to stay connected to your customers and supporters. Here are a few ways you can do it.

Keep folks updated. No matter what type of business you’ve got, there are plenty of people out there who want to hear from you. Keep the conversation going with your customers, fans and friends. Not only does it help you keep folks in the loop about any changes to your hours or product availability, but it’s also a great way to let them know how they can support you during this difficult time.

With so many folks confined to their homes right now, many people are spending more time online. Focus on creating meaningful content that resonates with your audience. Plan social content or drip campaigns that provide audiences with a look at the human side of your business, like a weekly “meet the staff” feature that introduces folks to your team or a behind-the-scenes look at how you make your products.

We know that this is a difficult time for everyone. We don’t have all the answers, but we’re committed to providing you with accurate, relevant, and timely resources that you’ll need as you navigate through the uncertainty ahead. We’re in this together, and we’re here to help.
