CAST SPOTLIGHT - Lana Brekke

Who are you in the play and what is a little backstory on your character?

I am the Understudy for all the women in Silent Sky. The women in this play paved a way for the future of both astronomy and the future of thought in the early 1900s. I believe each of the women, whether historical or fictional, are beautifully crafted and breathe reality into their lines. Out of the four women I understudy, I find that sense of determined purpose in finding the meaning of life and answers to the unknowns of the cosmos.

What’s your favorite part of this production?

My favorite part of this production is definitely the rehearsals. I get to experience so much talent in my midst, and I enjoy helping my friends with their lines. My absolute favorite part, other than dressing up in a pretty skirt, is getting an opportunity to play a character on stage. Especially if I can help my peers in the process. Being the Understudy has taught me so much about how a production is handled and all the hours that are dedicated to making an exquisite performance such as this.

Do you feel like you and the characters have anything in common?

As the Understudy, I must embody all the woman of Silent Sky. For each of my characters I find at least one quality to cling to that we both share. I share a desire to know the unknown with Henrietta, the importance of relationships with Margie, the never-ending drive of work in Annie, and the benefit of laughter in work.

Why should people come see the play?

This play is more than just a story about stars and their brightness, it is about something deeper. It is about the light found in connection with others. It is about how life is more than just great discovery, but the achievement of personal connection. Silent Sky is not just a play about female astronomers in the early 1900s, it is about the meaning of a life well spent, and that is something everyone can benefit from. That is why you should come and see it, because history shines a light into our void of reality.

CAST SPOTLIGHT - Caroline Johnson

Who are you in the play and what is a little backstory on your character?

I am playing Annie Cannon, a real-life female astronomer who worked with Henrietta and Williamina. She classified the most stars manually at around 350,000 and became known as the “census taker of the sky.” She developed the Harvard spectral system, used with the letters OBAFGKM. Annie also was passionate about women’s rights and was a part of the suffrage movement.

What is your favorite part about this production?

My favorite part about this production has been this fantastic cast and crew. It’s been such a dream for my first NU theater production!

Do you feel like your character, and you have anything in common?

Some things we have in common are that we both want to get things done efficiently and can be clever in certain moments. The main difference is that I am not passionate about astronomy or as aggressive in different types of relationships.

Why should people come see the play?

People should come see Silent Sky because you can learn more about history and it provides a space to laugh and cry through relationships and discoveries with some hidden gems included.

CAST SPOTLIGHT- Audrey Arnett
Who are you in the play and what is a little backstory on your character?

I play a fiery, Scottish woman named Williamena Fleming. As a young woman, she moved to Boston with her husband who soon abandoned her. As a single mother, she became a housekeeper for the director of the Harvard observatory, Dr. Pickering. He was soon impressed by her and hired her to work for him at the observatory instead. During her time at Harvard, she discovered the Horsehead nebula and cataloged hundreds of stars, nebulae, and novae throughout her career. Not only was she a very successful working woman, but she also loved hosting dinner parties, attending Harvard football games, and sewing traditional Scottish outfits for dolls.

What is your favorite part about this production?
Working with the cast and crew has been a blast, I’m so honored that I get to be part of NU’s production of Silent Sky. This is my first traditional theatre experience and I’ve been enjoying it very much!

Do you feel like your character, and you have anything in common?
I feel like her all the time because we both love to have fun! I relate to the undertones of sadness in her life story as well as her persistence, work ethic, and choice to laugh through it all and enjoy the ride of this crazy life.

Why should people come see the play?
Everyone here has been working so hard to make this production a reality. I think the story will make you laugh, cry, and you’ll also get to hear me do a Scottish accent that I’ve been secretly practicing for YEARS!

CAST SPOTLIGHT
Robert duPlessis Jr

Who are you in the play and what is a little backstory on your character?

I am playing Peter Shaw, a fictional character created by the playwright as a love interest to Henrietta Leavitt. He is a junior fellow in Astronomical research under Dr. Pickering, a famous astronomer of the late 1800s and early 1900s, at Harvard University.

What is your favorite part about this production?

My favorite part about this production is the evolution of the characters throughout the show. It’s also super cool to see all the actors embody the characters more and more with every rehearsal.

Do you feel like your character, and you have anything in common?

There are times I most definitely feel like Peter. We can both be a bit bumbling in words and say things that make conversations weird and awkward very quickly, but with good intentions.

Why should people come see the play?

People should see Silent Sky because it’s got a bit of everything for everyone. Without giving too much away, it’s a beautiful rollercoaster from start to finish. You won’t regret watching.

CAST SPOTLIGHT - Carolina Gillman

Who are you in the play and what is a little backstory on your character?

I am playing Henrietta Leavitt, who was a real-life astronomer back in the late 1800s. Thanks to her passionate dedication and fierce curiosity, we were able to discover that our galaxy is indeed one of billions upon billions. If you want to hurt your brain, look up Leavitt's Law! I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.

What is your favorite part about this production?

My favorite part of all productions is the community we get to build throughout rehearsals. It takes a village to put on a theater production, and it's so beautiful to see everyone working together and having fun.

Do you feel like your character, and you have anything in common?

One thing I think we have in common is our inability to sit still. We are both restless and feel that our life has no purpose if we are not using our gifts to better the world.

Why should people come see the play?

Everyone should come enjoy the show because watching a theater performance provides an escape from the stress of everyday life. And my mom is making star cookies.
