Did you know that the Ebell Costume Collection houses over 800 items of clothing, hats, shoes, and accessories, all donated by Ebell members and the community, dating from the 1870s to the present?

This extensive collection, which spans many decades of societal change, offers a unique perspective on the evolution of women's fashion. It includes everything from Victorian and Edwardian blouses and dresses with back closures requiring assistance, to the looser-fitting garments of the Arts and Crafts movement and the 1920s, and eventually the return of tight-fitting styles in the 1940s and 1950s.

Selections from the collection are periodically exhibited at The Ebell.

Could Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra plane finally have been found after 87 years? 🛩️ Lloyd Romeo and his .sea.vision team embarked on a quest earlier this year to uncover what happened on that fateful July 2, 1937, when the world lost contact with Amelia and her navigator. Now, nearly nine decades later, they believe they may have cracked the mystery.

Join us at The Ebell as we host project manager, Lloyd Romeo, to discuss their grand adventure, the thrilling exploration, and what lies ahead. Don’t miss this historic event as we commemorate Amelia Earhart’s birth anniversary on July 24, honoring the legend herself.

🎭It's Theatre History Thursday! With a twist! 💃

In honor of all the wonderful dancers who have their year-end recital at our theatre, we wanted to offer you some insight into the importance of dance! This art form is as old as time--culturally it is significant around the world for sacred and secular reasons. Bonding communities then and now, dance is a vital part of the performing arts, and we are so proud of the tiny dancers that grace our stage every June.

COMING SOON to the Ebell of Los Angeles--Art Salon and Lounge 🎶
Join us for a rare pairing of two jazz legends in an intimate and elegant setting. Joining them to round out their quintet are one of LA’s top women jazz drummers, Lauren Ellis, New York pianist John DiMartino, and bassist Dave Ross, whose grandmother was a former president of The Ebell.
Mary Stallings
Mary Stallings, now 85, starting singing with Dizzy Gillespie when she was just 15. She performed with many of the jazz greats of the era, including Ben Webster, Billy Eckstein, Wes Montgomery, Louie Jordan, Earl Hines and Cal Tjader, before joining the Basie Band. Retiring at age 30 to raise a family, she returned to singing in her 50s, when the NY Times review opened with, “Perhaps the finest jazz singer singing today” In 2017, she became only the 3rd woman in history to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the prestigious San Sebastian Jazz Festival, joining the ranks of previous jazz giants Max Roach, Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Elvin Jones, Keith Jarrett, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter.
Houston Person
Saxophonist Houston Person, at age 89, might be best known for the 30 years he spent producing, managing and performing with the Grammy-winning vocalist Etta Jones, but Houston has recorded over 75 albums, with jazz artists including Ron Carter, Bill Charlap, Emmett Cohen, Lene Horne, Lou Rawls, Janis Siegel, Horace Silver, Dakota Staton, Cedar Walton, Grant Green, Johnny “Hammond” Smith and Richard “Groove” Holmes. Mr. Person writes, “I want to give people good solid melodies with some improvisation and plenty of blues feel. You always want that dance feeling there, that happy, happy feeling.”

It's Theatre Facts Thursday!

The amazing effects we see today with lighting instruments are unbelievable! Creating atmospheres, adding moods, painting landscapes can all be done with the incredible instruments and technology we have. However, did you know that lighting design goes all the way back to the Greeks? At that time, the only light source they had for the stage was the sun, but these clever folks used mirrors and other tools to manipulate the sun's rays for effects! Eventually, candles, oil lamps, and gas lights were invented to brighten up an indoor space and add even more elements to lighting design. As our technology has advanced, lighting designers have even more options to add to a production. Today, we can program a light to move, add shapes, change colors, adjust focus and so much more with just button!

It's Theatre Facts Thursday!

Do you know why we use say upstage and downstage? It all began when theatre stages were built slightly sloped--this was called a raked stage. The stage would be angled so that the further away from the audience an actor travelled, the higher they went. Actors would literally travel downwards towards the audience giving that space the name "Downstage." Part of the reason for this building technique was to help the forced perspective of the set pieces. Essentially it tricks the audience's mind into thinking the set and stage are larger and deeper than they actually are!
