Once upon a time, in a part of Miami called BrownSub, now known as Brownsville, there was a place so special it drew people from all over the South as well as the rest of the nation. Those of us with a little age on us remember the good times inside the doors of the Hampton House Motel, featuring luxurious accommodations with valet parking, 24-hour food service, a banquet hall and a jazz club wher

e all colors of people congregated to hear the best performers of the day. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali were frequent guests and the Miami chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) had its weekly meetings there. Few places in Miami can boast of such a legacy. As the President of the Historic Hampton House Community Trust, I am asking for your help in achieving our dream of bringing back the Hampton House for future generations. We not only have dreams, we also have plans, thanks to the General Obligation Bond allocations designated by the people of Miami Dade County, which has given us a good start. We are planning a museum and archive dedicated to vintage jazz, a studio and a school for talented young musicians, and a stage for performances, in addition to first-class restaurant and banquet facilities.
