: Among many theatrical superstitions, one of them is to avoid wearing the color blue onstage.

Blue dye used to be among the most expensive, so producers claimed it was bad luck in an effort to keep costs down. However, some theatrical troupes would splurge on blue costumes to make it seem like they were doing better than they were.

Did you know Charles L. Blockson was a star athlete at Norristown High School and Penn State University? While traveling to participate in sports events, Blockson would visit bookstores to grow his collection of historical books about African-American history.

Did you know that most theaters that use letters for their rows skip Row I?

Unlike buildings skipping the 13th floor, theaters going right from Row H to Row J has nothing to do with superstition. At a glance, the letter “I” can easily be mistaken for the number 1, which can cause confusion both when box office attendants are selling tickets and when ushers are directing people to their seats in a dark theater.

that the curtain was not always there in the theater?

The curtain is undoubtedly the most distinguishing feature of modern theater; it did not exist during the eras of Greek theater or the Middle Ages. It was a product of the Renaissance.

The introduction of the curtain ensured that the audience was not distracted by scene changes or when the actors were getting ready for a performance.

Today we’re remembering Charles Blockson and when he joined us at the Centre Theater for the opening of the Charles L. Blockson Exhibition.

He spent his life in service of the collection and preservation of important pieces of history, and we are privileged to honor Dr. Blockson’s own indelible place in that history he himself preserved.

that you should never give a performer flowers before a show?

Giving a performer flowers is one of the great traditions of the theater. It’s a way of telling an actor that you loved what they did on stage. However, it is taboo to give a performer flowers before a show. It seems that tradition opposes rewarding an actor for their work before they have delivered it.
