The last concert of our fall season (Wednesday, December 6th) will feature Normal, the duo of Fred Frith and Sudhu Tewari, playing manually and electronically manipulated home-made instruments.

The duo formed in 2002 when Tewari sparked a revitalization of Frith’s early 80s explorations in self-made “planks of wood with strings”. Approaching instrument making not as beautifully crafted art objects requiring virtuosic techniques, but rather as crude de-constructions patched together using the simplest of means and requiring only minimal exertion to produce sound, the duo turns the smallest spring into a potential orchestra, the bluntest needle into a sharp response. As with any music, what is really going on is intense listening, tricks of memory, and the joy of discovery.

The event is free with online registration:

Jon Leidecker (aka Wobbly) is a human in the loop, making music with people and machines that listen. Improvising with recorded sounds, his emphasis on live performance blurs any clear distinction between his solo and collaborative work, which includes touring and recording with Negativland, the Thurston Moore Group, Jennifer Walshe, Zeena Parkins, Zoh Amba, Dieter Moebius & Tim Story, Matmos, People Like Us, SUE-C, John Oswald, Fred Frith, Thomas Dimuzio, Sagan and Huun-Huur-Tu. Labels that have released his music include Hausu Mountain, Illegal Art, Deathbomb Arc, Bureau B. His lectures on the secret histories of electronic music have been presented at Mills, Stanford, Oxford, UC Berkeley / Davis / Santa Cruz, MACBA and Peabody Conservatory. In 2015 he inherited Negativland's long-running Over The Edge radio live mix program, which continues to broadcast KPFA FM in Berkeley.

This concert features the music of Barbara Strozzi, the pioneering composer and singer of 17th-century Venice, fabled for her extraordinary voice and music alike. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime containing over a hundred works in total, and her music became known throughout Europe. Few composers paint human emotion as vividly or with greater insight, wit and poignancy than Barbara Strozzi, whose songs and madrigals stand alongside Monteverdi’s as some of the greatest of the age.

Conductor-singer Paul Flight, with a stellar ensemble of singers and instrumentalists, brings to life the splendid ensemble pieces of Strozzi's first collection, her Opus 1, including four and five part madrigals, trios and duets, alongside the laments, arias, and intricate cantatas of her later opuses for which Strozzi is best known.
