Queen Lily V
The Opelousas Imperial Mardi Gras Association is pleased to announce Aquanits Dionne Zachary will serve as Queen Lily V and will reign over the 2024 Opelousas Imperial Mardi Gras festivities.
Aquanits Dionne Zachary was Born and raised in Opelousas, LA. She is a graduate of Opelousas Senior High School. After high school she received an Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Louisiana Tech. She went on to become one of the first teachers of the St. Landry Parish Early Head Start program at the Grand Coteau-Sunset Head Start. She furthered her education by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Southern University A & M College. Aquanits was employed by the St. Landry Parish School Board where she taught Kindergarten and First Grade. She fostered an environment of inclusivity, gaining notoriety with the parents of her students as well as her colleagues for assisting those that were in need. Because of her love for helping others when she was offered a job at University Medical Center, she took the opportunity to help others on a larger scale. Due to the help that she provided to others; a colleague saw that she would be a great fit for a new job.
That is when she was introduced as a potential applicant to become an administrative assistant. She interviewed for the position and was hired on the spot. During this time, she found her passion in her new career field in the oil and gas industry.
Aquanits has now been employed at Quest Safety Solutions as a Health and Safety Consultant for the oil and gas industry for the past 11 years. Her day-to-day operations entail collaborating with the operators of large offshore companies and contractors. She assists them with training, reporting requirements, certifications, compliance reports and all other documentation to ensure that they can continue their day-to-day operations. Her efforts ensure that these companies maintain compliance with all local, State and Federal Regulations so that they are compliant to work at offshore and onshore locations. In this new capacity it is rewarding to know that she is still helping people so that they can provide for their families and their constituents. She is also the office manager where she makes sure that all the administrative aspects are complete so that the business runs smoothly and can continue to thrive. In her spare time Aquanits is also the Executive Assistant at Crazy Jim’s Janitorial Service which is one of her family’s businesses that has served Opelousas and the surrounding areas for over 30 years. Her day-to-day operations are to review proposals and execute contracts.
Currently, Aquanits is the president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Lambda Beta Omega Chapter here in Opelousas. She and the members of her sorority actively serve the community by assisting with the Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack Program. She also assists with cultivating young children to become leaders through the Youth Leadership Institute. Aquanits continuously find ways to uplift and give back to the community and helping others by assisting with back-to-school supply drives, providing clothes to those less fortunate, and donating head wraps to those going through radiation and chemotherapy. Aquanits is one of the Charter members of the Opelousas Rotary Club Sunrise After Dark and one of the past presidents. She now presides as the membership chairman. She is also a member of the Rotary Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS), which also encompass the action group against human trafficking. In 2022 she was awarded “Rotarian of the Year” because of her dedication and service to those of the community. In 2023 she was recognized by the Court Appointed Special Advocate of St. Landry (CASA) and received the “Friend of CASA” award along with her sorority. Aquanits and her sorority actively volunteered and assisted them for years by helping others in the community. She actively supports and assist other organizations such as Kiwanis Club, St. Landry Abilities, the Love Project, St. Jude, and the American Cancer Foundation just to name a few. Aquanits sits on various committees for AKA, CASA, and Rotary. She recently attended a Leadership Seminar to increase her knowledge as a leader in her job as well as the leadership role within her sorority.
Aquanits is very passionate about serving others especially those in her community. She is a member of Our Savior’s Church here in Opelousas, where she served for 10 years as a leader for the Check-in-team in the children’s church. She also actively participates in various women events and volunteering with other church community service projects. Aquanits is an advocate for breast cancer survivors, multiple sclerosis, and Chron’s Disease. Her hobbies include running, planting flowers and attending sporting events. She also enjoys listening to music, spending time with her family, loved ones, and her two children, Davanghn and Dashawn, and her fur baby Luke.
The King and Queen be formally presented at the Imperial Mardi Gras Ball scheduled for Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Delta Grand Theatre in Opelousas. This year’s theme for the ball is “Imperial Goes to Carnival.”
