In the 1950s, Wanda Jackson was performing at a club when the owner approached her with a demand.

Her Black pianist had to leave the stage.

His name was Big Al Downing, and he was an accomplished musician touring with Jackson's racially integrated band.

This was an era when segregation still shaped American entertainment. Black musicians could help create the music that white audiences loved, yet be denied the right to perform beside white artists.

The club owner expected Wanda to cooperate.

She refused.

Jackson later recalled telling him, "Well, sir, if he can't stay on the stage, I can't either."

It was an extraordinary position for a young white female performer to take in the segregated America of the 1950s.

Jackson had built her career by challenging expectations. She sang aggressive rock and roll when women were encouraged to sound sweet and restrained. She wore glamorous, fringed dresses when country singers were expected to dress conservatively.

But this confrontation was different.

It wasn't about her own freedom.

It was about whether a fellow musician would be treated with dignity.

Jackson and her band continued performing together. Downing eventually developed a successful musical career of his own.

Wanda Jackson would become known as the Queen of Rockabilly, entering the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

But her refusal to abandon a Black musician in an era of segregation deserves to be remembered alongside her groundbreaking music.

In Virginia, a high school auto shop class ends some lessons by handing single mothers the keys to free cars.

One of those cars helped a mother move from part-time work to a full-time job.

At Louisa County High School in Mineral, students spend months restoring donated vehicles under instructor Shane Robertson.

About 20 teenagers work on each car, repairing brakes, testing batteries, and servicing heating and cooling systems.

A mechanic conducts a safety inspection before the keys change hands.

The effort began in 2018 through Giving Words, a nonprofit founded by Eddie Brown and his wife, both former single parents.

Across its partners, Giving Words has donated more than 60 vehicles, with students helping refurbish about half.

In 2023, single mother Jessica Rader received a restored 2007 Prius, enabling her to work full-time and begin school.

For these families, classroom repairs become reliable transportation and greater independence.
