Meet the Judge

Jean Shepherd
I am so pleased to judge for the English Cocker Spaniel Club of Northern California specialty and some sporting breeds for the Del Valle Dog Club at the Harvest Moon Classic. I became interested in showing dogs in high school but did not start showing until after graduating from college. I have bred and shown English Cocker Spaniels since 1979 and Lowchen since 2009. I have also exhibited in Obedience, Rally and Barn Hunt. I am active in the Coulee KC and rotate teaching conformation classes for my local kennel club. I am a member of the ECSCA, LCA, Coulee KC, Star of the North English Cocker Spaniel Fanciers, DJAA and ADSJ. I am an approved mentor for Lowchen. I participated in developing the AKC Lowchen breed course and the Lowchen Illustrated Standard. I am currently approved to judge 22 Sporting breeds, Juniors and Lowchen.
I started pursuing judging shortly before retiring as a Registered Nurse.
Both of my daughters were brought up participating in Juniors. My youngest daughter is a breeder/owner/handler of English Cockers and an AKC Juniors judge.
Thank you for asking me to judge!

Meet the Judge Monday:

Shelby Lynn Russell is a second-generation AKC exhibitor whose mother bred, raised and showed Basenjis. She also had Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Pembroke Welsh Corgis and later became an AKC judge of several Hound breeds. All the while, Shelby traveled to the shows, participated in 4-H, helped ring steward, worked and handled for several All-Breed handlers and helped breed, raise, train, groom and condition the dogs at home and kennel sat for other AKC exhibitors.

Shelby was the top Basenji Junior Handler three years in a row and qualified and went to Westminster KC those three years. She finished her Basenji, Fanfare Heyday’s AKC Championship at Westminster KC under Anne Rogers Clark. Shelby got her first Border Terrier and foundation bitch, Terraholm Mudlark in 1996. In 2007, Shelby proudly won Best in Show at Hurricane Ridge KC with her home-bred bitch, CH Fanfare Cyd Charisse, who was ranked #1, #2 and #3 BT bitch for three years.

Shelby dedicated her work life to animals by serving as an Animal Control Officer/Sergeant and Animal Cruelty Investigator for 39 years and currently works for her canine reproduction veterinarian.

Shelby received her AKC Judging Permit for Basenjis, Border Terriers and Limited Junior Showmanship, and is eagerly working towards earning Regular Status for those breeds, as well as earning Unlimited Junior Showmanship status, before applying for more Hounds and Terriers.

Shelby is excited to judge Basenjis and Border Terriers at Del Valle in October 2023 and looks forward to enjoying judging AKC quality and purposely bred dogs in the years to come!
