BOTANICAL GARDEN LOCATED NEAR GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS. OWNERS NOW RETIRED. NO LONGER OPEN FOR EVENTS.

Renovation of the Rock Garden began back in 2022 when many of the larger evergreens were cut down because of damage by heavy wet snow. This opened up the area and allowed me to replant with ornamental grasses, shrubs and more flowering plants. Photos below taken in May and late September 2023.

If there is one plant that can lift your spirits even during the dreariest days of winter, its the hellebores (a/k/a lenton roses). Took these photos yesterday in the Shade and Butterfly Gardens. They bloom from February into April and over the years they have increased to form these gorgeous drifts of bloom.

To complete the year of posting for 2022 - a few pictures taken in September and October. More detail on the individual photos.

Photos from the garden in summer last year (2022) I have posted more detail on each individual photo.

I didn't post any photos of the garden in 2022 so here goes - from spring thru until fall, with more detail posted on individual photos. Beginning with three photos taken in Spring 2022.

Now its fall, the garden is loaded with many native plants in bloom - asters, golden rods, iron w**d, etc. I use a range of cultivars of asters which give variety in height and color. Great for birds, bees and butterflies. I also leave many seed heads on summer bloomers to give birds food for the winter.

Both borders in the Victorian Garden are now loaded with bloom. This photo, which I took today, shows a portion of the smaller border. Again, really benefiting from the extra light now the dividing hedge has gone.

Had she lived, Princess Diana would have celebrated her 60th birthday today. So sad when you think of what might have been. I have added two more postings detailing the Memorial Garden we created in remembrance.

We continue upkeep of the Memorial Garden dedicated to Princess Diana. Most of my Facebook friends, plus many visitors who toured the Gardens during the time we were open to the public, already know that we had to get formal permission to use her name. Following correspondence with Buckingham Palace, we were referred to Princess Diana's Foundation, where we were honored with the necessary permission (have posted a portion of that letter). Over the years that have followed, the Memorial Garden has become more and more shaded by large trees, but I feel it gives a calmer and more reflective setting.

Further commemorating what would have been Princess Diana's 60th birthday today. Before starting work on the "Memorial Garden in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales", I wrote to Earl Spencer
(Princess Diana's brother) hoping to get some idea of the flowers she loved. The answer: Roses and lilies, although forget me nots were her favorite flower. This is a photo taken in April a few years ago showing the borders full of lovely blue forget me nots, blooming alongside narcissus. "Forget me nots" - what an apt name, as I will never forget a Princess who did so much wonderful humanitarian work during her lifetime. She so deserved the reference that Tony Blair made on the day of her funeral, when he called her "The People's Princess.

Its hard to imagine how badly damaged the Victorian Garden was after the storm last Christmas. The large herbaceous border on the left is really lush now and should be full of bloom by July and August.

Two of my favorite flowers by the arbor - foxgloves and alliums. Love 'em

Victoria is having great success with her business "Tora's Mugs" (see post below) This isn't surprising since she makes a wonderful job providing personalized mugs on order. She made these two mugs for me - first one is from a photo taken on Kerry & Harold' wedding day here at the Gardens. The second one is a beautiful keepsake for Ed and I taken from the photo on the cover of our Rosewoods Brochure, which was in use during the time we were open. Mother's Day is coming up - what a great gift these would make!! If you need to order, just get in touch via her Facebook - "Tora's Mugs". She has produced an enormous range of mugs. I am thinking that couples who were married here might want one of their favorite wedding photo taken in the Garden, or any treasured memory they may have. Take a look at her page and see the range of mugs she has produced.

Tough few months in the garden following a heavy snow storm on Christmas Eve. At least 26 trees down in the cultivated areas. Easily the worst damage since we started the garden in 1995, with the Hummingbird Garden and the Victorian Garden taking the worst hit. Ed and I have worked like crazy, cutting and clearing. Family have helped out when they could - bless 'em. Pleased to say everything now looking good. Still a bit to do in and around the Hummingbird Garden. Over the next few months I will be posting some "before and after" pics. Starting today with the Shakespeare Garden.

We are retired now and the gardens are no longer open to the public. Before retirement our gardens were open by appointment for tours and events from 2007 until we retired in 2015. We began developing “Rosewood Gardens” back in 1994 when we first moved to TN, and it took many more years (far more that we had bargained for) to get to a point where we felt ready to host events, tours etc. Even though the gardens are now closed to the public, we still maintain them, and the 4-5 acres of landscaping incorporates 7 different themed gardens.
We were born in the U.K. and we lived there until our move to Florida in 1981. While on vacation in the Smokies in the early nineties, we decided this would be a beautiful place to put down our “forever home”. We purchased 17 acres of land which was mainly woodland and had our home built to our own design.
Being familiar with British gardens, we decided to develop a portion of our land as a large garden, landscaping it in a style we were familiar with - the English style - featuring many large herbaceous borders and garden “rooms”. The East TN climate, is very different to that of Britain, and we have had to adjust in terms of the variety of plants we use - successes and failures along the way, but that has been part of the learning curve for this project. We garden organically never using insecticides or pesticides, and our planting involves a lot flowers, shrubs and trees that attract birds, bees and butterflies.
The themed garden we are most noted for is “The Memorial Garden in Memory of Diana Princess of Wales” We received permission to create this garden in memory of the late princess, from her foundation and members of her family and they requested us to use this name. It is landscaped with plants we know she loved.
Weddings took place by the arbor in the “Wine & Roses Garden”. Our two historical gardens - the “Victorian Garden” and the “Shakespeare Garden” are landscaped in the style of the period they represent, and the knot garden area within the “Shakespeare Garden” was always a great favorite for wedding photographs. Other themed areas include the Hummingbird Garden; Butterfly Garden and the Shade Garden
How long we will be able to devote the time and effort needed to maintain “Rosewood Gardens” is always the question , but you can be sure we will continue its upkeep for as long as we are able.
