Alaska Summer Peonies

One of the great things about a Peony You-Pick is connecting with old friends and meeting new. We have met so many wonderful individuals this summer and heard so many interesting stories. Some customers gather peonies to spoil themselves. Some are looking to lift their spirits. Others stop by to give peonies as a birthday or anniversary gift. Some want flowers and petals for weddings. Others are going to dinner or hosting dinner. Some have fond memories of a relative and want to honor those memories. Peonies went onboard flights to Georgia and Florida. Some want to memorialize someone close by setting peonies afloat on the river. Others take them to shut-ins, or to hospitals, or senior care facilities. Some visitors just want to stroll through the field because they can't take peonies with them. Some pay the price of peonies forward. Others pick peonies to give away for no reason other than to spread joy. And finally there was the little girl who came with her grandfather and bought peonies for herself because today was her birthday and she just turned seven. We are so appreciative of all of our visitors.

These two buckets full of whites and pinks went home with a customer today. Also today we received a wonderful call from Mary of Georgia who visited the farm a couple of days ago. Mary said she arrived home with smile on her face, sweet memories, and beautiful peonies. We are always so appreciative of all who visit our farm.

Even with bumper to bumper traffic headed north, a lot of friends, neighbors, and travelers visited the farm today. One of the pleasures of a Peony You-Pick is the opportunity to socialize with visitors. It is always fun to catch up with returning customers and to meet new visitors. People buy peonies for all sorts of reasons: "I am treating myself. I deserve it." "We've always wanted to visit a peony farm." "We saw the sign and said, 'Yes!'" "It's been such a drab summer, I need a pick me up." "I need them now for a birthday." Celebrate your haul of fish with peonies. Or get peonies to make yourself feel better after getting skunked. Open daily 10-6.

Got cutters and a bucket? Great! Bring them with you. Several returning customers showed up today ready for action with their own gear. Of course we have cutters and buckets on hand. For customers traveling beyond the central peninsula with fresh cut peonies, we recommend a five gallon bucket with cold water to help your flowers weather the journey. We're open daily from 10 to 6 the entire peony season, which is about three weeks.

A rare glimpse of Alaska Summer Peonies from the back. Lupine in bloom, along with those pesky Dandelions. The Peony field is just over the hill. Hopefully today's sun will move things along a bit.

After an unusual spring thaw, the plants are finally on their way. Things will kick off later than last year. We'll have our new signs posted at the Robinson Loop signs when the blooms are ready.

This is what the field looks like as of April 20, 2023. In a few more days the ground will begin to show. This year it looks as if things will be set back a couple of weeks. But you never know. Predictions aren't science. We'll start updating our page when the plants begin to show.
