Portrait of Phil and his locksmith store in West Village. 🔑

The sun had set, and the sky darkened as I walked on this pathway. I noticed a little hut glowing with its neon lights so I stepped back to get a wide shot of it glimmering in the dark. And as I was looking through the view finder I saw a man appear inside and I got startled.

I put my camera down and then asked if I could take a portrait of him. His name was Phil and I'm sure all the locals recognize him because he's been in business for over 40 years.

He was telling me the ups and downs of being able to withstand being in business for that long let alone in the city. He told me to watch a documentary that featured his locksmith business and told me he hand-wellded all the keys that make up the exterior of his store - how cool!

He was a lovely man and learning people's stories is one of my favorite parts of taking portraits and living in NYC.
