“The closer we get to the freedom of childlike creative expression, the better the art gets.” Rick Rubin - “The Creative Act: A Way of Being.”
In nearly 15 years of photographing weddings, I’ve never done a formal “intro” on Instagram. Despite having beautiful headshots taken in the past, they never quite captured who I am. But these photos reflect who I am at this moment in time. They were taken by John about a week after I turned 40, with our little loves, Rowan & Sloane, at the enchanting , not far from our home.
My early days as a photographer were spent photographing life in Downtown Jersey City & NYC, where we lived for over 10 years. Our lives looked quite different then, with Instagrammable outings nearly every week that I frequently posted in this grid. John gifted me my first DSLR on our first wedding anniversary 15 years ago & we started our family a few years later in 2014. Since then, my days have been filled with creating & reliving the magic of childhood, especially since we began (secularly) homeschooling the girls. I would choose adventuring with them, gardening, & documenting it all almost over anything these days. I hadn’t fully realized how much this journey has influenced my art until recently.
Rowan will be 10 this October, & I can confidently say that I’ve taken a photo, if not multiple, every single day since the day she was born. This daily commitment is something I’ve only recently paused to acknowledge, & it’s something I’m incredibly proud of. John & I are both now at the unique age of having experienced being a bride a groom & now being parents & it’s something I truly do feel brings a different level of emotion & empathy on wedding days. I document life & the passing of time just like I do in our personal lives & it is one of my biggest joy’s & privileges.
