Olympic legend Usain Bolt unveiled as T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador

Usain Bolt expects the T20 World Cup in June to go a long way in raising the status of cricket in the USA

Usain Bolt, the fastest man on earth and a cricketer in his youth, has been unveiled as the ambassador of the 2024 men's T20 World Cup, to be played in the West Indies and the USA in June.

The T20 World Cup won't be the end, of course. In 2028, cricket will make a comeback to the Olympic Games - it last featured in 1900 in Paris - in Los Angeles, with men's and women's T20Is.

THE PIONEER Corps which trekked into the area which is now Zimbabwe from South Africa and claimed Fort Salisbury for the British on 12 September 1890 included among its troops, Monty Bowden. A former Surrey cricketer, he went to South Africa with Gardner Warton's side in 1888/89 and captained England in the second test match against South Africa at Cape Town.

It was not surprising therefore that the troops took cricket equipment with them and played several games whenever they were camped. On 16 August one of these took place at Fort Victoria (now Masvingo) when, after a morning visit to the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, the A Troop, which included Bowden, played a combined team from the B and C Troops. Thus the first cricket match in Zimbabwe took place even before the country, in its present boundaries, existed.

Bowden died of fever and an epileptic fit the following year in Umtali but there were several other cricket enthusiasts among the Pioneers. As a result the game quickly became established. The Police played at least two matches in Harare in 1891 and on the 10th October that year, the Salisbury Cricket Club was founded. Cricket was also played in Umtali and by 1894, three clubs had been formed in Bulawayo. That year saw Bulawayo challenge Salisbury to a match and in 1892under the captaincy of Henry Taberer, at that time con- sidered the best amateur cricketer in South Africa, Salis- bury undertook the round trip of some 960 kilometres only to be beaten by an innings and 83 runs.

The difficulties of organising cricket in the 1890s were shown by the events of the return journey during which there were many delays. Rivers were in flood and the coaches fre- quently got bogged down in muddy conditions. When they were still 30 kilometres south of Fort Charter two of the team decided to walk and they arrived in Salisbury several days before the rest of the party.
