This year marked a transformative period for Brazil-Australia relations through the ABCC. Our second Brazil Week was a resounding success. We celebrated the year's achievements, including the rebranding of ABCC and the expansion of Brazil Week to Sydney.

Gratitude to our dedicated CEO, volunteers and sponsors – Minerva, LATAM Airlines, DFAT, TIQ and Brisbane City Council and all other sponsors. Two-way city networking events and festive Christmas gatherings brought our community together.

Special thanks to our directors, whose volunteer efforts have driven our success. As we embrace the Christmas spirit, may it bring joy and reflection. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a New Year full of hope.

As we welcome the new year, we are on the cusp of exciting possibilities. Looking forward to a new year with lots of news for Brazil Week and we hope to count on you again.

Cheers to a Happy New Year, full of joy, prosperity and the fulfillmentΒ ofΒ dreams!

Please meet another of Brazil Week's sponsors - Shaun O'Keefe, CEO of Network Financial Planning. Shaun has been helping the Brazilian community in Australia for a number of years. It all started when his neighbour introduced him to many Brazilians on the Sunshine Coast and it grew from there. His neighbour also introduced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and all its benefits to Shaun's life! Here's what Shaun recently shared with us:

"We have a couple of Brazilians on the Network team, and they've helped me better understand the cultural differences along with the financial needs of the Brazilian community in Australia. It may be obvious, but the Australian financial system is a lot different than in Brazil. And so, I find myself helping many Brazilians learn how it works in Australia and start getting everything moving forward for them with their finances.

But I also learn so much about the passion and the hustle it takes to start from scratch in a new country. Not to mention the simple things like the discipline of saving money - Aussies have a lot to learn from Brazilians in this way. Pretty inspiring, really.

I chose to participate in Brazil Week to invest deeper in my relationships with the Brazilian community and to establish Network as a trusted adviser to help them achieve their financial goals and dreams in Australia.

Oh, what a night! Navala Churrascaria, located on Brisbane's waterfront, was the place to be during the 2023 Brazil Week Festivities. For the third time, this Brazilian restaurant served up mouth-watering Brazilian BBQ eats, and traditional Brazillian drinks (think the famous Caipirinha cocktail), and provided the location for an incredible night of entertainment and giveaways. Thank you to musicians Ricardo Bona and Eder Oliveira, Samba Vibes drummers Lucas Saad and his team, and dancers Giane Abbot and Vicky Rosa, who dazzled us with a variety of entertainment against the backdrop of the beautiful Story Bridge. Thanks also to our sponsors: Brisbane City Council, Trade Investment Queensland/ Migration Queensland, Latam Airlines, Rodrigo Arcuri Home Consultancy, Garra International and BioGiene. And finally, thank you to our special guests, including Cr Vicki Howard representing the Lord Mayor for your attendance and support.

09/11/2023

At the vanguard of Brazilian-influenced music in Australia for more than 25 years, The View From Madeleine’s Couch forges a glorious and lush sonic path through Brazilian jazz and bossa nova. They effortlessly bring the elegance of Brazilian melody and harmony to their original material, and celebrate the classics, along with obscure gems, of the Brazilian songbook.

The band is a staple at Brazil Week events, and lead vocalist, Anje West, says they love being involved and connecting with Brazilians locally.

"It's another way for us to connect with Brazilian audiences who might not know that there's a band in Australia that's been performing musica brasileira for 26 years!" she says.

"It's always been important to us to represent the music and culture of Brazil to Australian audiences in a way that shows we have integrity and respect for the music we play and write. The cultural bridge we have been part of building for all these years just gets stronger as our two communities grow together. Brazil Week is a great way for Brazilian and Australian musicians to share how far the scene has come over the past decade, and how connected we are to each other through our shared passion for Brazilian music."

We hope you'll check out one of their gigs soon!

We once again must thank Brisbane City Council for their wonderful support of Brazil Week 2023!

Firstly, thank you to Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner for your video message of encouragement and support for Brazil Week events. We appreciate your commitment to making Brisbane so welcoming for people of all cultures.

Secondly, a sincere thank you to Deputy Mayor, Cr Krista Adams, Chair for Economic Development and the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games for your speech at our opening reception. Your words were affirming of the council's genuine appreciation of the local Brazilian community.

And of course, thanks must also go to Councillor Vicki Howard of the Central Ward for her unwavering support of Brazil Week. Cr Vicki generously gave her time to attend both the opening reception and A Night in Brazil at Navala Churrascaria restaurant, where she made a rousing speech.

We can't forget the team at Epicure and NW group who were an enormous help in preparing for our launch event at Brisbane City Hall. This venue and the dedication of the events team always exceed our expectations. And sponsorship from Brisbane City Council funded the musicians from Brisbane Choro Group who entertained guests during the Opening Reception.

Finally, we were delighted when City Sounds scheduled a series of concerts in Queen Street Mall by Brazilian musicians and bands: Eddie Gazani and Friends, The View from Madeleine's Couch, ForrobodOz, and Ricardo Bona. We are grateful.

13/10/2023

We'd like to shine a spotlight on The Latin Directory! We sat down with the founders to find out more about how they're helping Latin American businesses operating in Australia to thrive.

Q. Can you tell us about the Latin Directory's origins and vision?

The Latin Directory began as an idea by co-founder Catalina Meikle in April 2023 when many of her coaching clients were experiencing challenges unique to Latin American businesses in Australia trying to grow. At the time there was no easy to use, centralised way to find Latin American businesses other than Facebook and WhatsApp groups. So with a heart to see Latin American businesses grow and thrive in Australia, The Latin Directory was launched in June 2023.

Today, The Latin Directory continues to grow weekly, focusing on bringing visibility, inspiration, and business growth to the Latin business community through online promotion, events, monthly Zoom Masterclasses, trainings, and member networking. We are open to all Central and South American business owners, community groups and non-profits Australia wide.

Q Can you give us an example of how the Latin Directory has helped someone or their business?

We have had lots of amazing feedback from our wonderful members, these are some examples of what some members say about us:

The Latin Directory has been the best platform to grow not just my business but as an entrepreneur and as a person; Cata and Dave have a wonderful commitment in supporting and providing events and activities to really impact and connect the Latin Community in a wonderful way since they started!

Belonging to The Latin Directory has been a spectacular experience! Thanks to Cata & Dave I have expanded my network, and this has allowed me to make strategic alliances that allow me to sustain my business.

Many of our members have been inspired to do new things to grow their businesses for the very first time, for instance: display their businesses in a networking event, design business cards, present a masterclass in English, or create their landing pages at the Directory, among others.

Q Can you share a little about yourselves and your family?

Founders and husband and wife duo, Dave & Catalina Meikle, are a unique couple full of joy and a passion for serving and supporting the Latin Community in Australia. They have combined their local and international experience of being an Australian and a Colombian to bring this unique expertise and specialisation to the projects they work on. Catalina is dedicated to helping individuals and local small businesses grow and brings her experience as an Industrial Engineer to her own brand of Life & Business Coaching with BeLive Coaching. Dave created his first online business in 2002 and brings over 20 years of brand building experience to every project. Through his video production company ECKOmedia, he has helped businesses all over QLD craft powerful marketing messages. Dave also has a number of other brands including most recently the popular Wedding Livestream and Funeral Livestream brands. Dave and Catalina and their 3 month old boy Timothy have a passion for Brazil and all the countries involved in the Latin American community around Australia.

Q Finally, can you tell us why you sponsored Brazil Week and chose to donate your time to helping out at events.

We chose to sponsor Brazil Week because we believe that there is so much to gain when we all work together towards helping each other succeed. The Brazilian business community brings so much joy, passion and expertise to the business landscape in Australia and we are excited about helping them grow even more through partnership with The Latin Directory.
