Ingrid Klimke - working with young horses, another good read for everyone who rides:
β€œStep by step, you always try to go on long lines, and big circles, come with your leg, give again, she gives, you give, pat her and explain to her – yes, that is the way, now try to stretch more and give your back. It is just important to keep her forward, from behind into your hand, that’s very important, don’t start just trying to pull her neck down, it is more important that she stays in rhythm, and into your hand.”

Today with farewelled the gorgeous Welsh D β€œGritty” as he heads home with his new rider Charlee!
This is the third horse we have helped Charlee and her parents to purchase as she continues to move up the grades through our buyer advocacy service.

After purchasing him, Gritty stayed with us so we could provide support in their transition.
Together we did regular lessons under saddle and on the ground, attended some excursions/clinics to ensure Charlee was supported and safe, went trail riding and did some trouble shooting.

We now have a solid plan in place to continue their transition towards getting out and competing in the future.
There is no rush or expectations and our plan will continue to evolve and change as they develop as a combination. We believe this is always the safest and most effective way to ensure success.

Thanks to all our supports who have also provided their help during his time with us!

🐴 I love reading about misconceptions when it comes to feeding horses, but today I’d like to debunk some common myths about good old sodium chloride.

πŸ§‚ Myth #1: Salt only needs to be fed when the weather is hot.

🐴 Truth #1: Salt needs to be fed 365 days a year because it is vital for many bodily processes and is excreted in sweat, saliva, mucous and urine. Even in the midst of winter, horses need salt.

πŸ§‚ Myth #2: Horses instinctively know to drink water regularly, especially when they are hot and sweaty.

🐴 Truth #2: A horse’s thirst reflex is triggered by sodium, which is a component of salt. Horses’ sodium requirements need to be met in order to seek water.

πŸ§‚ Myth #3: A horse can meet their sodium and chloride requirements with a salt block alone.

🐴 Truth #3: Unlike cattle, horses do not have an abrasive tongue and are not designed to lick harsh surfaces to extract nutrients. While it is technically possible for a horse to consume their daily salt requirement from a salt block, it is much less work and more physiologically-appropriate for them to consume loose salt that is either provided in a meal or left out free-choice.

πŸ§‚ Myth #4: Horses know what nutrients they need and can self-medicate with supplements such as vitamins and minerals.

🐴 Truth #4: Salt is the only nutrient horses have been studied and proven to actively seek out when it is required. They will not seek out other nutrients β€œbecause they know they need it.” Look at how much salt and molasses (palatable additives) are added to free-choice supplements.

πŸ§‚ Myth #5: Himalayan rock salt is better for horses than plain salt.

🐴 Truth #5: Himalayan rock salt contains naturally occurring components other than sodium and chloride. Some may view this as a positive; however, it is usually a more expensive means of supplementing salt, and often contains traces of iron which almost never needs to be supplemented given horses are generally oversupplied iron by their forage intake alone.

🐎 Your horse should be receiving a minimum of 10g of salt per 100kg of body weight each day; typically more after exercise, intense weather, or illness.

Thank you to Seymour Equine Clinic and Dr Jess for attending these school holidays and providing dental demonstrations to our students! Our school horses are feeling much happier after their annual checkup and our students learnt so much about dental care 🦷

Opportunities like this allow us to share the knowledge on best health care practices so future generations can ensure their horses stay in tip top shape!

I am surprised at the number of people who were unaware of the distinction between a cavesson and a nose band in the recent post about lost horsemanship information. And I was annoyed at the young riders who corrected me, saying there is no distinction. For them, here is another lost detail from military horsemanship.

Starting in the early 1950s I took lessons from a former cavalryman. He taught us how a US Cavalry Trooper had two wool blankets with him when riding outside his garrison. One blanket was tri-folded (folded in half lengthwise, then folded into thirds along the folded in half length) for use as his saddle pad. His other blanket was rolled up and attached to his saddle with leather straps. He slept with one blanket placed on the ground and the other was over him.

At the end of the day's march, that might be up to 75 miles, when they made camp their saddle pad was wet with sweat. The wet wool blanket was unfolded and put over the horse as a cooler. Lose forage/hay was placed under the wet blanket in piles, five along the spine and four along the ribs on each side as the horse was tied to a picket line. This technique allowed the horse's warm body heat to dry both the horse's back and the wet blanket. As the blanket dried and the horse cooled, the hay fell out from under the dried blanket to the ground where the horse ate the hay.

This was explained to us with great precision. Army methods were very exact, like the five piles along the spine. There was a correct and an incorrect way to do everything. This technique is very useful still for drying a wet blanket while leaving it on a horse. It dries a blanket very quickly, doesn't waste hay and avoids the necessity to bring the horse to the barn and switch to a dry blanket.

Young riders, try to find this in your catalogs, magazine articles and chats. ;)

Our first day of the Holiday Program for September was super fun!
The kids enjoyed a day of riding both on the arena and in our mountain trail/obstacles paddock in the beautiful sunshine.
They learnt some in hand training and how to ask their horses to trust them to go over bridges and seesaws under saddle.
We also got it introduce our β€œnew horse” and learnt some vaulting techniques and how to fall/tumble safely off their horse with our resident acrobatic Ashley. πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ
