Okanagan colab - Community Lab

Okanagan colab - Community Lab Okanagan coLab (Community Lab) — driven by the power of community to grow our businesses & ourselves. And the best part? How does it work? Simple.
(53)

Since 2011, Okanagan coLab has been supporting new entrepreneurs and inspired creative professionals to work in a new way — through coworking. We are a community of people who choose to work together to make our work, our lives, our cities, and our communities better. The coLab has been home hundreds of people — helping them find their career path, start and grow a business, and be a part of an am

azing community. Being a coworking space means we live through values of Community, Creativity, Collaboration, Purposefulness, and Celebration. Our goal is to be the best work environment for creators, makers, and change-makers. This space creates the ideal mix of collaboration and heads-down work. The coLab provides a focused environment for members to get their work done while benefiting from others to bounce ideas off or contribute. Each individual member gets to choose the exact mix of those two factors that they want. Show Up
The value of a coworking space comes from the people that inhabit it. Bring your ideas, your creativity, and your personality. Work Together
Whether you need a hand with some code or want to build out an idea for your product, collaboration can help you get stuff done and find new avenues to explore. Build Great Things
Those great things can be business relationships, a new app, or the first step to your new bootstrapped startup. Make it happen together.

🌲 Amidst the unexpected turns in our journey, we must bid a heartfelt farewell to our cherished space at the Okanagan coLab. Our time within these walls was more than just about sharing a physical space; it was about growing together, fostering innovation, and nurturing a sense of community. 🏢💔

The cracks in the building, caused by nearby construction, may have shaken our physical foundation, but our spirit and resolve stand stronger than ever. We are incredibly grateful for the support, inspiration, and collaboration that the coLab provided us, making it a beacon of collective growth and learning.

While we continue to be disappointed by this unforeseen closure, we choose to look back with gratitude for the memories made and forward with optimism to the new chapters ahead. 🚀🌟

Stay tuned as we turn this challenge into an opportunity! We’re excited about a blossoming partnership, and our winter offerings that promise to keep the spirit of learning and community alive. This is not an end, but a new beginning. 🌱🤝

Thank you, coLab, and thank you, our amazing PEC community, for your unwavering support and resilience. Here’s to new beginnings and continued adventures in education and community spirit! 🌈✨

Update to our community regarding the closure of Okanagan coLab at 1405 St. Paul 📣

Thank you for your incredible support, resilience, and collaboration during this challenging time. 🙏

The closure of coLab’s 1405 St. Paul location due to safety concerns from nearby construction has profoundly impacted our business, members, and community.

While facing many challenges and disruptions, we’re actively working on solutions:

🏢 Building Closure: Unfortunately, the closure is indefinite as per a City order. We're exploring relocation options to ensure continuity for coLab and its members.

🗞 Media Release and Awareness: To illuminate the closure's ripple effects and our commitment to finding a resolution, a release to the media and general public is underway.

🤝 Meetings with Stakeholders: Scheduled discussions with UBC Properties Trust, Kerkhoff Construction, and other stakeholders aim to explore viable paths forward.

Our priority is restoring business continuity and addressing community needs. Your support is invaluable during this uncertain period. Stay tuned for updates after our January Town Hall meeting.

Thank you for being a vital part of our community. Feel free to reach out via email at [email protected].

Thank you Castanet for bringing light to some of the issues and impacts of coLab's closure.

Embracing the unknown, finding strength in openness, and navigating transformation with gratitude. 🙏

I wanted to address my recent silence and share some updates. Our 12-year journey at Okanagan coLab has encountered unexpected challenges. Due to unanticipated structural damage caused to our building by nearby construction, we’ve faced the difficult decision to reluctantly close our doors for the foreseeable future.

Navigating this period has been a whirlwind of emotions—grace, grief, certainty, and uncertainty—all at once. It’s disorienting, and while my mind pushes for clarity and progress, being present has shown me a different path—one that isn’t clear yet.

They often say tough times make us stronger, but I believe in openness—allowing each moment to shape me, embracing both joy and hardship during this confusing time. I’m choosing to remain present, trusting that clarity will emerge as we navigate this uncertain territory.

Okanagan coLab’s next steps aren't entirely defined, and we’re learning to accept this uncertainty and to adapt. I want to express my deepest gratitude for this community’s unwavering unity and support. Life’s journey is full of changes, and I’m grateful to have shared this chapter with such a compassionate community.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

With deepest gratitude,

- Shane

Cohere Community Conversation: Critically Thinking About Critical Thinking in Engineering Education with Alon Eisenstein

In a surprising twist, the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report for 2023 omits critical thinking from its coveted top 10 skills list. But does this mean the end of its relevance, or was it simply misunderstood all along?

Join us for an engaging discussion led by Dr. Alon Eisenstein, Assistant Professor at UBC Okanagan’s School of Engineering, as we unravel the evolving role of critical thinking within engineering education.

🤔 Key Questions to Be Explored:
• What is the true essence of critical thinking?
• How can critical thinking be effectively taught and assessed within the realm of engineering education?
• Why is critical thinking an indispensable skill, and what is its purpose in shaping the engineers of tomorrow?

About Dr. Alon Eisenstein:
Dr. Eisenstein brings expertise in entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership. His dedication to Entrepreneurial Work-Integrated Learning (EWIL) and commitment to equity and diversity in education make his insights invaluable to this discussion.

🌐 About Cohere Community Conversations:
Cohere, a weekly gathering of purpose-driven creators, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, is on a mission to foster positive change in communities worldwide. Through interactive workshops and events, Cohere bridges personal growth, business sustainability, social equity, and community well-being. By connecting passionate individuals committed to creating a sustainable world, Cohere aims to inspire actionable outcomes and drive positive change.

Join us on September 28th to be part of a conversation that goes beyond the surface, challenging conventional wisdom and paving the way for a new era of critical thinking in engineering education.

Why coLab?

Whether it’s the professional environment that motivates you to be more productive, the ample networking opportunities that lead to your next big move, or just the fact that you actually have a place to meet clients that isn’t a coffee shop, coLab allows you to work more effectively.

Origin Story

Community has been the core foundational element of coLab since it was first founded in 2011.

We didn’t have a big fancy event space, we didn’t have a professional-looking boardroom, and we didn’t have a nifty new coffee bar.
