www.anewleaffloral.ca A new leaf style? - If I could put it into a few words it would be rustic modern.

I am a huge fan of free form, asymmetrical shapes. Similar to how plants and flowers grow in nature - the way they stretch towards the sun. As much as I can I try to use greens and flowers from my garden and sometimes forage for locally grown ingredients (especially from the grounds of outdoor wedding sites - if possible). Flower colors I gravitate towards are soft muted pinks, lavender, coral, an

d off white which include garden roses, ranunculus, hydrangea, lisianthus, stock, to name a few. I like to include seeds, berries, branches, vines and various contrasting greens to give texture which highlight florals. Use of flowing silk ribbon, rustic jute, and vintage lace on the bouquets add elegance and inclusion of sentimental jewelry pieces (ie Grandmother’s Cameo) make it personalized. I find beauty in lush floral bouquets but also in a simple greenery table runner. All my life I have been involved in floral design, through foraging and creating as a young child, weddings and special occasions for family and friends, and now professionally trained working out of my studio. Although I do have a distinct style my main focus is on understanding a client’s vision and working together to create wedding florals that they love and will create amazing wedding day memories!

opened up my computer to write this post about 2021/22 at the same time an eagle flew over my office window which apparently represents “viewing a situation or goal with a higher perspective”…. so I’ll do my best.

2021 has been a lot of things…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
rewarding - had the biggest wedding of my career which included the largest custom built arbour and most elaborate head table I’ve ever done (with the help of 3 freelancers)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
challenging - working with last minute COVID restriction changes, setting up a wedding during a heat dome (+55° on the ceremony concrete pad), flower shortages/price increases, and working in smoke filled air as most of our weddings are outdoor.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
heart felt moments - had the privilege of working with so many wonderful clients and vendors. Thank you!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
learned a lot - had the talented freelancing with me all summer and had some great conversations about life and the impact of floral design.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
filled with - 11 large scaled weddings, an online store for valentines, mothers day and Christmas, bouquets at a local cafe, corporate client installs, a winter flower subscription and planted some specialty blooms in my garden (creme brûlée phlox was this years new favourite)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2022 is just about here and I am excited to see what it all holds. One thing I do know is 2022 will be my 10th year of flowering weddings and also the last one for me. I have loved being involved in wedding floral design from the smallest boutonniere to the largest custom install. From meeting the most wonderful clients and working with so many talented vendors. Although its a lot of hard work from slugging heavy flower buckets, setting up wedding days in the Okanagan heat, working almost every weekend, being on your feet all day it is totally worth it and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. So thank you to so many of you reading this post, for your encouragement, support and loving flowers like I do.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cheers!

The tiny white roses on this boutonniere were from the groom’s garden. I saved them in my floral cooler from the fall to use for his December wedding. Today it reminds me on a day with only 8 hours of daylight that brighter sunlit days are ahead. …happy winter solstice.

We choose warm toned florals for her bouquet… gold and deep red roses, brown caramel orchids and yellow centered garden roses with contrasting blue sapphire evergreen and eucalyptus pods. Also included white waxflower in the bouquet to tie in the waxflower tucked into her braid. So many details that came together beautiful… the bride (my daughter in law) freelanced with me the summer before her wedding and we spent lots of time in the studio planning this beautiful day.

…all the fresh snow lately brings me back to this special day with these two. Special because this is my son and daughter-in-law’s wedding from 2015. I haven’t done a lot of winter weddings and seen many done here in the Okanagan. But with these photos by .co I have no idea why there aren’t a lot more?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This dreamy day started with a first look on the Okanagan lakeshore and ended up at the (a heritage building downtown)… a candlelit ceremony performed by the brides father under an arch built by the groom followed by a candlelit long table dinner and lots of dancing. I’ll post more of this wedding in the weeks to come and maybe inspire more couples to embrace the winter beauty of the Okanagan.

According to a resent study which I can totally relate to being around flowers:
1. Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3.Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends.

This is my all time favourite floral centrepiece photo. White florals are super hard to photograph. They often look flat and the flowers just blend away into one big white blob unless you use lots of texture to break up the blooms. And the talented camera perspective and perfect light capture is soooo good!

Wild and romantic bouquets are my favourite. The best bouquets contain lots of texture with elements not typically used, as in this case blooming oregano and hydangea branches. I follow the movement of the way stems bend/arch. and always thinking of balance with colour and shape. When I have some larger sized blooms on one side of the bouquet I tend to balance it out with either a grouping of smaller blooms and/or branches that extend out and down. Even though a bouquet looks a bit wild it needs to make sense to the eye.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This bouquet contains foraged hydrangea from my daughter’s neighbourhood, butter yellow garden roses, china asters, sedum and blooming oregano from my gardens and a few blooms from my wholesaler. Beautifully photographed by

made the inside of the studio look like the gardens outside… this wild meadow box is one of many heading to tomorrow. Can’t wait to see them in their beautiful space. I am a firm believer when designing florals they need to feel like they belong in a space. They need to make sense with the surroundings, not over power a space, be harmonious and complimentary for an overall cohesive design. So fortunate to have been able to forage some of the ingredients we used today… not something we can do often but it sure helps with the way I like to design.
