Parasols have always been a fascination for me and of course my daughter, when she was little, loved parasols as well. When I asked her for permission to post this picture she asked, “How old was I?” Needless to say this was before date stamps on photos. My guess is three. Others guesses welcome. .

Valentine’s Day is special not just because it is a day of romance, proposals, and a great date night, it is also a day that beloveds give special gifts. Sometimes it is not a box of chocolates! This beautiful illuminated manuscript adorns the cover of a boxed book titled King Rene’s Book of Love. It is filled with images illustrating the allegory of the King’s dream giving his heart to Amour, the God of Love, who gives it to the Page, Ardent Desire to find his love Sweet Grace and to give her his heart. This very special gift was from my very special husband on Valentines Day.

Today is Losar, the Tibetan New Year on the second new moon, a time to clean and clear your home and maybe other things as well. It is customary to SMILE throughout the day to spread happiness to one and all. I performed a ritual of cleansing and clearing the wintry energies on Ravens View Farm on this rare sunny day. This shadow picture reminded me of the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya where I went on retreat last fall and reminded me of the wonderful Buddhist teachings I received. Mountain retreat centre

Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Here is our situation. Ravens View Farm is fortunate to be located in Peachland which is due south of West Kelowna over a small mountain. The fire is about ten miles North of us. We cannot see the fires but it brings back memories of being on alert and watching fire kindling ponderosa trees on the hill across the ravine five years ago as it approached the farm. We have been firesmarting our farm every spring for the past three years and Mark has sent the last of his extensive wild and wonderful ephemera to auction in Chicago just one month ago to preserve his 40 years of archiving in case of this eventuality. Our grab and go kits and emergency preparedness plan have been updated. Yesterday we spent the day with teen helpers doing fall clean up around the property instead of picking peaches and plums as the farmers market was canceled along with all other events across the province. Our deepest disappointment was having to cancel a two week visit with our niece at the eleventh hour literally when the state of emergency was declared with mandate that non essential people in the province go home and not come. The Cottage at ravens view farm is now available for evacuees with animals who need refuge. Apocalyptic is the word that is used for a reason. And now I have family in Southern California preparing for a hurricane and a year’s worth of rain being delivered. Wish it were coming here.

REMEMBRANCE DAY
A poppy from my summer garden blooming for Remembrance Day today.

Sorrow is part of the earth’s great cycles, flowing into the night like cool air sinking down a river course. To feel sorrow is to float on the pulse of the earth, the surge from living to dying, from coming into being to ceasing to exist. Maybe this is why the earth has the power over time to wash sorrow into a deeper pool, cold and shadowed. And maybe this is why, even though sorrow never disappears, it can make a deeper connection to the currents of life and so connect, somehow, to sources of wonder and solace.

Kathleen Dean Moore’s Opening Quote to The Wild Edge of Sorrow by Francis Weller

At dawn on this cold Winter Solstice I performed a spontaneous seasonal ceremony for some intrepid souls. It was the inauguration of my ceremonial staff which holds the gifts of love from a lifetime of friendship. Today we release any darkness from the past year and welcome the waxing of the sun through the coming seasons and the manifestation of our wishes and intentions for the new year. Happy Solstice. Oh my! the sun just broke through our blanket of Okanagan clouds.
