Μιά μέρα, ό διάβολος εμφανίστηκε σέ τρείς μοναχούς καί ρώτησε τόν καθένα ξεχωριστά τί θά άλλαζαν από τό παρελθόν.
Διάβολος: "Αν σού έδινα τή δύναμη νά αλλάξεις κάτι στό παρελθόν σου, τί θά άλλαζες;"

Ό πρώτος μοναχός απάντησε γρήγορα μέ μεγάλο αποστολικό ζήλο:
-Δέν θά σάς επέτρεπα νά αφήσετε τόν Αδάμ καί τήν Εύα νά πέσουν στήν αμαρτία, γιά νά μήν απομακρυνθεί ή ανθρωπότητα από Τόν Θεό.

Ό δεύτερος μοναχός, πού είχε καρδιά γεμάτη έλεος, απάντησε:
- Θά σέ εμπόδιζα νά απομακρυνθείς από Τόν Θεό πού θά σέ καταδίκαζε γιά πάντα.

Ό τρίτος μοναχός ήταν ό πιό απλός από τούς τρεις. Αντί νά απαντήσει στόν διάβολο, έπεσε στά γόνατα, σταυρώθηκε καί προσευχήθηκε:
- Κύριε, λύτρωσε με από τόν πειρασμό τού τί θά μπορούσε νά ήταν καί τί δέν ήταν.

Τότε ό διάβολος έβγαλε μιά διαπεραστική κραυγή καί, στριφογυρίζοντας από τόν πόνο, εξαφανίστηκε.
Έκπληκτοι οί άλλοι δύο ρώτησαν τόν αδερφό τους:
- Αδελφέ, γιατί απάντησες έτσι;

Ό μοναχός εξήγησε:
- Καταρχάς, δέν πρέπει ποτέ νά κάνουμε διάλογο μέ τόν εχθρό.
Δεύτερον: κανείς στόν κόσμο δέν έχει τή δύναμη νά αλλάξει τό παρελθόν.
Τρίτον, ό διάβολος δέν ενδιαφέρεται καθόλου νά μάς βοηθήσει, αλλά νά μάς φυλακίσει στό παρελθόν γιά νά παραμελήσουμε τό παρόν.
Γιατί;
Γιατί τό παρόν είναι ή μόνη στιγμή πού μπορούμε, μέ τή χάρη Τού Θεού, νά συνεργαστούμε μαζί Του.
Ή στρατηγική τού διαβόλου, αυτή πού φυλακίζει περισσότερο τούς ανθρώπους καί τούς εμποδίζει νά ζήσουν τό παρόν σέ ενότητα μέ Τόν Θεό, είναι αυτή πού «θά μπορούσε συνέβη καί δέν έγινε».

Άς αφήσουμε τό παρελθόν στά χέρια τού Ελέους Τού Θεού καί άς αφήσουμε τό μέλλον στά χέρια τής Πρόνοιας Του.
Τό παρόν είναι στά χέρια μας μαζί μέ τό χέρι Τού Θεού».
