Today we opened our garden for charity for the last time this season to The Holt Gardening Club. It’s always a pleasure to spend time with fellow gardeners and to support the National Garden Scheme. The cutting garden was the main attraction but there was also a lot of interest in our Geum collection. Most of our species Geums flower in April and May which will mark the timing of our garden opening in 2025.

Last week we visited Iford Manor and had an absolutely delicious lunch in their restaurant followed by a private tour of their cutting garden and formal topiary area. We’re always intrigued to see other garden’s cut flowers and came away with some new ideas for our own cutting garden. Thank you for making it a truly special afternoon for me, my husband and daughter.

Plant Heritage is the world’s leading garden plant conservation and research charity, committed to the conservation of cultivated plants in the British Isles. We became members of Plant Heritage after our last visit to RHS Chelsea in May 2022 having met with Plant Heritage's representative.

We had been thinking about starting a National Plant Collection for a number of years but first wanted to be sure that we had the right environment for our chosen plants and second that our conservation efforts would be of value to the organisation. Two years on and we are now the National Plant Collection holders for Geum coccinea and Geum rivale cvs, awarded by the Plant Heritage Plant Collections Committee in June 2024. A National Plant Collection is a registered and documented collection of a group of plants. With the support of Plant Heritage we aim to conserve species Geums and other Geum cultivars for the benefit of future generations, and to build and share our knowledge of this collection with others.

We would like to acknowledge the support and expertise of Sue Martin, holder of the National Plant Collection of Geums for kindly donating plants and offering advice in helping us build this new collection.

Our National Plant Collection will be available for people to view, either by appointment or as part of open days to the public organised through The National Garden Scheme.

Dried Flower Wreath Making . Workshops run throughout the year. Please get in touch through our website if you are interested in planning an event.

Last Thursday we ran a flower arranging experience from our premises at The Bath Greenhouse. These events last for around 3 - 3.5 hours and include a tour of our cutting gardens, a recommendation for the types of flowers and foliage to use in an arrangement, how to condition garden stems, an introduction to the principles and elements of floral design and how to apply them to make a gorgeous garden flower arrangement. Although we grow many annual cut flowers in our cutting garden, we do try and focus more on perennial cut flowers in the workshop so that participants who don't have their own greenhouse can introduce appropriate plants to their own gardens. People often leave these events inspired to build their own small cut flower patch which is fabulous. Our next event on 2nd August is fully booked but if you are interested in attending a flower arranging experience please get in touch through our website as we plan to add two more events during August and September. Finally we are pleased to share a short video that captures just three of the lovely designs from our recent workshop.

Kind Words: “Beautiful setting, fantastic instructions and gorgeous flowers. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Thank you!”.

Only six weeks to go and we are working extremely hard to be 'garden ready' for our National Garden Scheme opening on July 13th and 14th, 2024. Yesterday, we finished planting out over 1000 annuals which were raised from seed in our greenhouse and polytunnel. Most of these young plants have found a home in our purpose built cut flower garden (protected from badgers and deer). Every year we introduce new varieties of cut flowers so there is something to inspire or interest new and returning visitors.

If you are interested in visiting Court View (home of The Bath Greenhouse) tickets can be purchased in advance through ngs.org.uk (perfect for giving as garden gifts) or we can take card payment at the gate on the day. Please visit the National Garden Scheme website for more information about our garden as well as hundreds of other interesting and beautiful gardens which open through the National Garden Scheme throughout the course of the year.

It was pouring buckets yesterday afternoon, absolutely no opportunity to get outside and enjoy the garden but it didn’t dampen our workshop activity creating pretty floral wreaths.

We will be opening our garden to the general public on Saturday 13th July and Sunday 14th July, 2024 in support of the National Garden Scheme. The NGS supports a number of amazing charities each year including Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, The Queen's Nursing Institute and Parkinson's UK, as well as a number of other gardens and health charities.

The National Garden Scheme is run by volunteers including county organisers, staff, trustees and 3,500 garden openers. These people work tirelessly to bring NGS events to fruition and in 2023 the organisation donated almost £3.4 million to its beneficiaries.

From now until mid-July, we at Court View (home of The Bath Greenhouse) will be working very hard to bring the garden to life with numerous summer annuals as well as established plants, trees and shrubs, and calling on our friends to help make cakes and serve refreshments on open days. These NGS events are the most important dates in our calendar. Over the past three years we have raised just under £5,000 through garden visits, teas, cakes and plant sales and hope to more than double that figure in the coming few years.

The cost of entry for our garden is £5 pp. Children are free. Dogs are welcome. Refreshments and plants will also be available to purchase on the day. You can either purchase your entrance tickets in advance through ngs.org.uk or pay on the gate on the day. We encourage you to visit the NGS website, there are so many beautiful gardens around the UK that are open to visitors through this scheme.

Finally, we host a number of 'open by arrangement’ visits in support of the NGS. In the past the garden has been popular with floristry students, WI members and gardening groups. If you have a party of ten or more people who would like to visit in July or August on a prearranged date, please contact us through [email protected]. Entry price is £10 pp and includes a 1 hour garden tour and a homemade tea.

Cool, crisp and neutral tones for today’s post. As usual our wreath contains many garden grown elements and a few foraged items.

We have been purchasing a florist’s favourite called Limonium tartaricum (Bulgarian statice included in this design) but hope to start growing it in the cutting garden this year. A very useful hardy perennial with short branched stems which dry to white. Perfect for wreath making.

GROW YOUR OWN CUT FLOWER PATCH WORKSHOP

A one day class designed for beginners and more experienced gardeners. We grow a wide selection of flowers and foliage at The Bath Greenhouse and use our established cutting gardens to show you how you can design and develop a cut flower patch or small cut flower garden of your own to produce beautiful, seasonal, home-grown blooms.

Places are limited to six people to provide full opportunity for questions, answers and discussion. Handouts will be provided. No slideshow given. Instead, you will be able to view cut flowers growing at the peak of their season in an established two acre plot.

Date:

19th July 2024

Course runs from 10am - 4pm.

Please send an enquiry through our website if you wish to attend an advertised class outside of the published open enrolment date(s).

Past feedback: "Thank you so much for a very special day Maria. You've given me so much food for thought and inspiration - my mind has been completely restless since!".
