Quaker Oak
The Horfield Quaker Meeting peace post, newly installed in the back garden, was carved in 2016 by Susannah Tombs of Broad Campden Quaker Meeting.
The wood was sourced from the oak forest of Ragley Hall in Warwickshire. Ragley Hall, which was designed by Dr Robert Hooke, was built for Edward Conway, 1st Earl of Conway, and completed in 1680. Lady Conway was a Quaker, attending Alcester Meeting and she employed only Quaker servants. She corresponded with notable early Quakers, including George Fox, who may have visited her there.
The wood comes from the main trunk of mature European oak (quercus robur) felled in 2016.
Denise Howard, local bricklaying specialist and fencing expert, installed the post with the help of her husband, Paul, today, 24 August. The post should last for 75 years, we hope!
