The Aerial Focus Spring Training is less than a month away so here's a rundown of prerequisites and teaching focuses:
🎓 Straps with Eloise
Prerequisites:
Strength- Short arm straddle up unassisted, long arm straddle up, meat hook. Flexibility- must be able to touch toes from standing to ensure proper technique and form without overloading the shoulders
Teaching focus:
Focusing on technique in the foundational movements. During this exploration, finding which technique suits your body type, as everyone is different. Focusing how to create clean lines and proper alignment in the air. We will focus on spinning, flares, switches, beats, choreography, sequencing and movement quality
🎓 Trapeze with Trystan
Prerequisites:
A good base level of strength, several pull ups and leg lifts. Must be able to always tuck under the bar with ease and pull up to front balance with ease. Comfortable working at height
Teaching focus:
Trystan will run a dynamic trapeze workshop focusing specifically on catch release tricks. The session will look at the use of tempos, learning new vocabulary and linking different catch release tricks
🎓 Rope with Jack
Prerequisites:
A good 10 second two handed hang and ability to invert without assistance
Teaching Focus:
During the sessions we will be focussing on moving through meat hook as a pathway. Using it as an entrance and added flow pathway as well as the hold as a move itself. Exploring some of my favourite drills and exercises to create a strong, confident position in this area.
🎓 Hoop with Ana
Prerequisites:
Unassisted mount/dismount, able to stay on the hoop for sequences/transitions rather than just single moves, air inverts - not just from the floor
Teaching Focus:
We will work on flow, paying special attention to lines and technique. The focus will not be on learning single moves - although you may be learning moves that are new to you

We are so excited to host the newly developed theatre production Tess by Ockham's Razor & Turtle Key Arts
Tess is a groundbreaking adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles and has a 3-night run starting tonight.
An ensemble of performers weaves together Hardy’s words and the extreme physicality of circus to tell this tale of power, loss & endurance. Against a backdrop of shifting projections, the cast wield wooden planks, climb shifting walls & move through ropes & swathes of linen to evoke the vast landscapes & interior worlds of Hardy’s Wessex.
It is a story which still has extraordinary relevance for our times in its incredibly nuanced evocation of female relationships, sexual desire, consent, privilege and poverty.
This retelling captures the beauty, heartbreak & yearning of the novel & draws upon the incredible strength of the circus body to create a Tess as heroic as Hardy intended.

It’s an exercise in collective dreaming and collaboration, of holding fast to the visions but also being able to let go, pushing it over the mountain and letting it roll, the balance between tension and flow.
There’s a misfit magic about the way it happens, from fag packet drawings to late-night conversation as well as the necessary spreadsheets and cad plans. Even the mistakes and misunderstandings can manifest magic no one quite planned or could know. It’s a subtle art and balancing act, relying as much on the faith, skill, vision and humour of each person as it does on the collective vibe. While it’s a given you could usually always do with more time and money, it’s as much about the limitations more often than not. That’s when, by necessity, a lot of the magic happens. It’s an inexact science and unfathomable quest, but either way, I am always struck by the heart and soul people bring to it and the sense of unity the process embodies. After quite a long break from hometown shows this has been emotional and as healing as it is inspiring in many ways. We sailed some uncharted seas together back in the old days, stormy at times, too, but it’s been a beautiful thing to bring a crew back together, old and new, and I can only hope you will enjoy seeing the show as much as we have enjoyed making it thus far.
💞Massive love and respect to all the crew, here and there, near and far, old and new x D

Wandering wistfully down memory lane, one can’t but remember those golden moments, dizzying highs and of course the crushing lows! The challenges and victories, trials and tribulations, the mountains moved and worlds dragged up from the dust for a fleeting taste of freedom, an escape from this earthly realm into some other Eden, paradise found and made of our own collective dreaming. Given the open ground, we can all find our feet, as well as our magical wings to fly, and therein see the very best of ourselves, as well as the wonders of others, loosed from the chains of the humdrum every day, free from the gutters of servitude and the dark streets of sorrow, to dance again, and stare glassy-eyed in childlike wonder at a magical other world, if only for a moment, just beyond the limitations of this one, where we are free to dream and be, free to fly in the wild blue yonder of impossibility, such is the realm wherein we are honoured to work and play, so it’s our pleasure to invite you all to join us once again !

This has to be one of the most powerful & emotional moments for me in all the many such moments I have witnessed. The way it brought together the ghostly white characters from our statue years with the haunting music we used for so many shows, alongside the use of the dramatic built environment as a vertical performance space. Also, the stark contrast to the heady cabaret hustle and bustle, the way everybody was drawn out into the courtyard at just the right time and this rich, emotive energy floated down from the rooftops with the performers, moving people to tears as they gazed in wonder up above.
It’s a moment that will stay with me forever. It was a pivotal and pinnacle moment. A culmination of all the energy & effort so far, the incredible and crazy mission to bring all this collective creative dreaming into being, to make it real, to make the invisible visible.
It still gives me goosebumps to think about it and a fluttering in my chest like some kind of ghostly bird trying to escape, perhaps the stirring of the soul ?
Here, you see that spirit so beautifully and majestically embodied by Rowan Fae and Dela Seward as the performers, facilitated by Wim Penhaul and the rigging team in the shadows.
Don't miss out !!

Origin story
Where did it all begin? Well, in some ways, it’s all about beginnings, new beginnings, reinventions, rebirths & revolutions. It’s always beginning, it’s never-ending.
But the first time I SAW the invisible circus was in a huge old Victorian factory depot in Camberwell, south London. It was floating in the ether, rising in the dust, flickering in the diffused light of these big old round drop lights that hung in a circle from the girders of the vaulted ceiling, lighting up the imaginary ring below. But there it was, ghost-like in my mind's eye, shimmering in the shadows, tempting, tantalising, calling me, daring me to bring it into being. In some ways, I have been chasing that show ever since.
It was 1991, I was 23 and running with conspiracy sound system, cracking squats for the parties & spending days & nights on my hands & knees painting huge backdrops for the decor. I had actually done my first public performance as some kind of staff-spinning go-go dancer at one of our parties in Brixton a few weeks before, but that’s another story. This place was huge, & finally, we were going to be able to put on a full techno circus show, which was the dream we had been building towards through a long winter of cold squat stakeouts, police standoffs & awesome free party Raves.
Despite a victory in the high court to gain us the extra week we needed to pull it together, internal politics would be our downfall, it was a heartbreaker. In the end, it didn't happen & before leaving, I wrote The Invisible Circus in big chalk letters on the floor as a bit of a f**k you & left at dawn. Looking up into the huge industrial big top space one last time, I imagined the show one last time.
Then 3 years later in 1994, when I would become a street performer in Portugal that’s what I told anyone who asked what we were called

The world's first, last, and only🤘🏽Heavy Metal Acid Panto🤘🏽was one of our most hilarious and surreal productions; it was awesome in so many ways, to embrace the great Panto tradition on the one hand, but to interpret it in such a whacky post-modern way, to follow the classic Panto format and structure yet to subvert it so gloriously!
Reinventing the various classic characters into a warped post-modern setting with Iron Slash, who was trying to steal The Rock, by seizing control of the mystical magical sacred studded jacket with 666 studs from our unwitting hero, The Dwayne! This show saw my reintroduction to performing in Drag as the alternative fairy godmother Yes Love, based on our local café hostess who would greet visitors with a “Yes love?” to take their orders.
Other classics included Iron Slash’s sidekick Rocksteady, TinkerHell, Buttons and the denim panto horse, not to mention the unstoppable force that was the Travesty Dance Troupe, all heroically scored by the heavy metal incarnation of The Carny Villains, the awesome Battleaxe! This was another classic group devising approach with Dave Rudi as our ever-watchful, ever-loving outside eye.
I mean, Panto season is near upon us???

British Eccentricity – Cirque Jules Verne Amiens France May 2014 🎪🎹
This was an epic and inspiring adventure! Another rare occasion where we had the opportunity to bring a bigger troupe to a historic building, this time, it was a circus building in France, where we were invited to participate on a collaborative show with Carnesky’s Tarot Drome by UK producers CryingOutLoud We took a similar cast to our Blackpool outing to create a bespoke performance, & I was to travel with Rimski, of bicycle piano infamy.
In a classic Doug move, I couldn’t find my passport in the days running up to departure, dismantling my entire Caravan more or less in an attempt to do so. Getting another at such short notice was a no-go so in the end. I just got in the van, and off we went without one. If anyone is going to get me to France without a passport, I thought, it's Rimski! And sure enough, with just the right amount of fumbling and slight of hand, somehow we managed to get through & onto the ferry! Getting back would not be so easy, but that’s another story.
Rimski & Handkerchief and I have history, having been in the same places many times in our lives, from Banbury in Oxfordshire to a tiny village in Portugal, but it was when sharing a stage with Cirque Idyllic at Glastonbury we would be officially acquainted and have been steadfast friends ever since, chips of each other’s old block so to speak. Here, I can be seen riding on his Piano, one of my fave entrances! We are delighted to have him along with his Bassycle pilot Handkerchief for Welcome to the Future.

Squat the lot ❤️🔥
I’m proud of our heritage, our invisible culture, our unwritten history, our story that sits outside the pages of the mainstream, unrecorded by it, though slowly and continuously ever emerging until we see it was the origin of everything, everywhere and by everybody, the collective we…. Persons unknown, as was always written on legal papers served in response to the Section 6 squatters notice we would affix to the door of the buildings we occupied.
I loved it, really, as it is an act of resistance in its purest form when directed at corporate ownership, of course. It challenges the domination of our built landscape by these forces. It says No! Everything does not belong to you, it belongs to all of us, it’s not yours, it’s ours, its not individual, its collective. Everything and anything else is a compromise really. A deal with the devil of sorts, as a wise old man named Gypsy Dave Star once told me, “not so much has really changed from the times of the Pharoah’s Dougie, "it's just now the slaves beg to work”.
That said, I am also immensely proud of the DIY culture squat land spawned and all the ways that transient, amorphous, proactive, positronic way of life has influenced and infected the mainstream, the myriad of activist and alternative art movements it has unleashed, the communities it has built, the projects and companies that have gone on to support and protect their people as well as serve the people of the society they stand to challenge something different than the business as usual dog eat dog operating system we are forced to be a part of.

📣Showtime Throw Back - Ghost Town at Pro Cathedral ✨
This is still one of my favourite shows, perhaps because I had more of a lead role in designing it, & it was a chance for me to distil down what the essence of The Invisible Circus was for me into a slightly more developed and less freestyle show, again quite self-referencing in its setting and story and probably not quite as finessed as it could have been in places but I loved the built environment we created and drew a lot of signature elements together from our history of street shows and squatted spaces.
The premise of the old show house closed down is one we would return to and mirrored our real-life activity of occupying these once-public spaces before they are transformed by waves of economic regeneration. The irony is not lost as we now seem to be on the final frontier of the wave in an industrial unit we have rented for a decade, which seems to be one the last of its kind in the city. Little did we know these shows were economic prophecies as well as social commentaries.
As ever, the show was a collective and collaborative devising effort, with our long-time Circus sister Petra Koehler coming over from Germany to be the outside directorial eye. It's another one I would love to have another go at producing if only there were a space to do so.

Festivals
Festivals have become such a mainstay of UK culture, from their earliest incarnation of the Stonehenge Free, Elephant Fair & the whole summer season of free festivals that would become established briefly in the 70s, a blossoming of alternative lifestyles with the emergence of movements such as The Peace Convoy, often reigniting older traditions of such gatherings that had occurred in these places, on common land for centuries. When Glastonbury was the only ticketed festival & almost shunned slightly for it, though easily accessed without the walls, it is surrounded by now.
This lawless anarchic movement wasn’t all sunshine and flowers, of course. Criminal elements impacted certain aspects of the scene often as negatively as the establishment forces did; however, the attack on defenceless travellers at the Beanfield en route to Stonehenge 1985, the entire scene, & by default, its community was declared an enemy of the state. Not to be stopped, this subculture would of course, reappear in the 90’s as it collided with the free party raves. Taking the party out of the warehouses & into the fields, again a brief blossoming as it was finally declared illegal by the criminal justice bill of 1994.
Of course, try as they might, you can't kill the spirit, & free parties are still a thriving subculture to a whole new generation. Festivals, of course, are now an industry, not just a scene, & despite the often awful weather conditions, nobody seems to do them quite like the UK, a culture we are very proud to have been a part of.
