Apologies for this not coming to Facebook sooner, we thought it had been shared across from instagram yesterday🤦‍♂️

A quick montage of our visitor’s photos they have sent us of Carrier’s Cottage Garden!

BIG THANKS to all who visited The Country Garden Flower Company’s home garden last weekend. We hope you all enjoyed it and you’ve now found homes within your own gardens and vases for all the plants and flowers you purchased!

We’re very much hoping everyone left feeling inspired and we’d answered all of your plant/ flower questions.

Lots of you asked if we would be doing this again and the answer is yes, so you can see how the garden develops through the seasons, but we’ll keep you posted as to the date. (Probably with a touch more notice next time😉)

We were definitely very lucky with the weather this time for sure!

In the meantime an ever changing selection of plants and seasonal flowers can be found upon our roadside stall here at Carrier’s Cottage CO2 0PN from 10am-dusk everyday.

FEED YOUR PEONIES!!! (Second most common mistake!)
You can’t expect a plant to produce lots of, what are quite massive, blooms without good sustenance. After the initial w**d clearance of the season just as the shoots start to show our plants are fed with organic Fish, Blood and Bone meal at a rate of 30g /sqM around the crown, they are then mulched with organic composted green waste and left to do their thing until the blooms have been harvested. If you are cutting make sure you cut the stems to forearm length only, leave plenty of foliage on the stems to help feed that root back up!
After flowering they will be fed again at the same rate with the feed above and irrigated over the hottest driest months. Early September they will be fed again, just as the plant is building up the buds for the following year below ground. They are then left to die down naturally for the winter with the spent top growth removed once it has become dried/ straw coloured.

If you have to lift your peony plants to relocate or make more shallow in the ground, please wait until the winter time when the plant is dormant to do so.

Hope this helps and you all get to achieve good results😃

Our post is coming along in two parts. If you’re interested please check out both.

We’re now on the cusp of our Peony harvest and once it starts we’ll end up with yet another question thrown at us, that is asked by many….

‘My Peony plant has never flowered, I’ve had it for years what should I do???’

Answer: Hybrid Peonies are complete DIVAS. Once established they will do well and perform there annual display continuously for years to come, the problem is planting them in the correct place/way initially and their aftercare.
Peonies are tolerant of most soils except those extremely sandy and free draining that don’t hold on to their nutrients for long, so be aware of this when choosing your planting position. Peonies also require full sun to flower well. They will grow in shade but on the whole will just provide you lush green leaves on a yearly basis with not a bud in sight. Plant them with at least 8hrs per day of direct summer sunlight preferably more. Do NOT let them become over shadowed or made to compete with surrounding plants for nutrients and water. Peonies within a mixed border do not do well unless you make a conscious effort to rid nearby plant encroachment. Make sure you get to see some soil around individual peony plants at the base and let them breathe!
Our peonies for flower production are planted 1m apart and nothing else is allowed to grow near them and they are hand w**ded 3-4 times throughout the growing season.

DON’T PLANT TOO DEEP!! (Most common mistake!)
The plant requires only 2-3cm of soil above the top of the tuberous root where the shoots appear from. Too deep and the plant will only produce leaves with perhaps the odd tiny bud that will never open.

DON’T BUY CHEAP!!
We’ve all made that mistake! Buying cheap never pays. Cheaper tubers/potted plants will usually come with less eyes (growth buds) usually 2-3. Find them with at least 4-5 eyes if you can they will establish better and come into flower faster

SACRIFICE BUDS MADE IN THE FIRST YEAR!!
Remove all flower buds in the first year if you see any being formed. Just the bud, leave all the foliage on the stem to help build the crown of the plant and establish that tuberous root! Look after that root and results will come.

Follow on with part 2 on next post…
