Happy Cat Day!

Every February 22 in Japan is National Cat Day. In 1987, the Executive Cat Day Committee in Japan chose February 22 after a poll. The date 2-22 can be pronounced ni-ni-ni, which sounds close the Japanese equivalent of a cat's meow, nyan-nyan-nyan. 🐱🐈

The Japanese people go all out on National Cat Day. Children get into the spirit by doing cat art that is then displayed at local libraries, schools and community centers.

Shops sell a variety of cat-themed novelty items and adults often partake in cosplay, dressing up as their favorite animated cat. You’ll also find sushi and baked goods made into the shape of a cat and of course, there’s plenty of pet parents taking to social media to share sweet snaps of their feline friends all decked out for the occasion.
Japanese railway firms also get into the spirit, selling commemorative train tickets that come paired with a photo of a popular local feline. The tickets even come stamped with a cat-shaped design to make them extra memorable. ⬇️

[Translated in English from Italian]

Dear Friends, today, as almost all over the world, also in Japan we celebrate Valentine's Day (ヴ ァ レ ン タ イ ン ・ デ ー, Varentin Dee)!

Unlike in Western countries, where engaged couples exchange gifts and spend romantic evenings, in Japan it is of fundamental importance to give chocolate, prepared by hand or purchased.

In this case, it is the girls who give chocolate, not only to their loved one (the boys can then make up again during another party held on March 14) but also to the people they love.

There are different types of chocolate to give as gifts:
- honmei-choko (本命 チ ョ コ), to be given to one's lover;
- giri-choko (義理 チ ョ コ), to be offered to classmates or co-workers;
- tomo-choko (友 チ ョ コ), for closest friends.

❤️🌸❤️🌸❤️🌸❤️🌸❤️🌸❤️🌸❤️🌸

Happy Valentine's Day!!

- honmei-choko (本命チョコ), da donare al proprio innamorato;
- giri-choko (義理チョコ), da offrire a compagni di classe o colleghi di lavoro;
- tomo-choko (友チョコ), per amiche più care.

Let's talk about bento boxes! 🍱
A bento is a home-packed meal of Japanese origin. A traditional bento may contain rice or noodles with fish or meat, often with pickled and cooked vegetables. Containers range from mass-produced disposables to hand-crafted lacquerware. Often various dividers are used to separate ingredients or dishes, especially those with strong flavors, to avoid them affecting the taste of the rest of the meal. Bento are readily available in many places throughout Japan, including convenience stores, bento shops, railway stations, and department stores. However, Japanese homemakers often spend time and energy on carefully prepared box lunches for their spouses, children, or themselves. Bentos can be elaborately arranged to look like popular characters from Japanese animation (anime), comic books (manga), video games or to look like people, animals, buildings, monuments or items such as flowers and plants.

One of the traditional dishes eaten on New Year's Eve in Japan is Toshikoshi Soba (年 越 し そ ば), literally New Year's Eve soba (そ ば) (年 越 し).
The soba eaten on New Year's Eve is a longer version of the thin pasta that is eaten throughout the rest of the year, as it is believed that being longer, it also augurs a long and "thin" life in the sense of running smoothly and accidents.; another meaning is to cut ties with the old year.

The exact origin of why this soba is eaten on December 31st is not known. Some speculate it may have started during the Kamakura (鎌倉 時代, Kamakura-jidai) or Muromachi (室町時代, Muromachi jidai) periods; it is certain that it became a stable habit during the Edo period (江 戸 時代, Edo jidai) during which citizens or merchants began to eat this dish to attract good luck for the new year.

There would be no particular rule that establishes when it should be eaten (at any time on December 31st, by midnight of the same date, in the moment of transition between December 31st and January 1st, etc.), however, it seems that many families eat Toshikoshi soba by the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve.

In this way, the accounts related to the hardships and misfortunes of the past year would be closed without running the risk of taking them with them in the following year.
