Thanks to everyone who came to our Windrush Day celebration with Gathering Ground CIC at the weekend, Liming. We all had a great time, including the young people who've left their props for their performance with the National Theatre of Scotland, Wonder Lands.

We love Gathering Ground, our local cafe on the canal. They pride themselves on serving as a platform to impact the community, build connections & inspire people to engage with good food. We're excited to be partnering with them this Saturday afternoon to celebrate Windrush Day - and that Caribbean menu they're serving looks really good!

We loved collaborating with Glasgow Sculpture Studios for Alberta Whittle's Day of Joy at Glasgow International, and are really looking forward to their GI show this year. Joey Simons is an artist and writer who works with suppressed working-class histories and what they can teach us about contemporary social struggles, and in Beyond the Forbidden Gate he explores histories of enclosure, public housing, refugee organising and workers’ opposition in North Glasgow, with a series of talks and workshops in some of our favourite libraries, including the Mitchell, Woodside and Possilpark Library.

Which is a great excuse to visit these invaluable spaces.

Happy World Art Day! We have happy memories of our Day of Joy, a collaboration with Maryhill Integration Network and Glasgow Sculpture Studiosture Studios for Alberta Whittle's hostile environment; business as usual (A REMIX) for Glasgow International. The first public engagement most of us had attended after lockdown, it was a deeply moving affair, and one that reminded us of the communal power of art.

Tony Roper on his classic play, "The Steamie".
'It broke new ground because it was written by an actor' (he's best known as Jamesie Cotter in Rab C. Nesbitt). 'That doesn't fit into the plan that actors act, writers write and directors direct. It also featured a lot of women which was unusual. Most plays were all men with a token woman. This was all women with a token man. On top of that, it was a play about women written by a man. At the time, all of the plays about women were feminist plays. They had a point to prove. Although "The Steamie" didn't preach a message, it was revolutionary for its day.'
Is "The Steamie" still 'revolutionary'? Come join us and Glasgow Anarchist Film Club this Sunday to find out!

It's the 50th anniversary of the original stage production of the Rocky Horror Show! Join us and Glasgow Anarchist Film Club for a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and an exploration of how a transgressive musical homage to horror B-movies, rock n'roll and polymorphous perversity became such a beloved cultural phenomenon. Dressing up and joining in optional, and very welcome.

A developer wants to demolish the beautiful polychrome brick City Sawmill building in Port Dundas, designed by George Bell in 1893 and currently used by Carnival Arts Yard.

It was listed after I made an application.

The owner appealed this.

I'm pleased that their appeal has just been rejected.

Finally some good news – our building is now listed, as having cultural and historic status! We have Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney to thank, for applying to Historic Environment Scotland, who have given it a C-listing, and saved it from being developed into yet another block of luxury flats.
Paul has commented: “The City Sawmills at Port Dundas are an outstanding example of Glasgow’s industrial past, of which we should be incredibly proud. As a city and as a population, we should celebrate our history and our heritage, including our industrial past.
“There is absolutely no justification whatsoever for demolishing it.”
As you’ll know if you’ve visited, our building isn’t the fanciest or grandest, but we agree with Historic Environment Scotland that it’s an important historical record of working class life in the city, and as a former saw mill, the importance of the timber trade. As their assessor said, “I find that the exterior of the building retains much of its original design and character. While the interior has been altered, overall, it retains features of architectural and historic interest.
“The building contributes to the understanding of the social, economic and cultural history of the nearby Forth and Clyde Canal and the surrounding area.”
And we hope to take a major part in the future cultural and social history of this unique part of Glasgow.

We’re loving Alberta Whittle’s current exhibition at The Modern Institute, “Even in the Most Beautiful Place in the World, Our Breath Can Falter.” She promised Caribbean Gothic, and delivered on that. One of our favourite paintings from the show - ‘Autumn Equinox - abolition invocation’. Putting us in the mood for the Day of the Dead.

We had a great time working with Alberta Whittle for Glasgow International, and are looking forward to her new exhibition at The Modern Institute, 'Even in the most beautiful place, our breath can falter'. Here, she uses poetry as inspiration to explore the relations between Britain and the Caribbean, and the Caribbean Gothic. We'll be at the private view tomorrow, exhibition opens Saturday.
