Glastonbury Symposium Investigating Signs Of Our Times
(11)

The Glastonbury Symposium is one of England's longest-established and acclaimed 'alternative' conferences, where the audience is often as interesting as the speakers! Held in the unique environs of the fascinating and varied town of Glastonbury in Somerset, the Symposium has grown and evolved massively since its inauguration at the Blue Note Café in 1990.

The Glastonbury Symposium team met this week to start serious planning for 2025’s event, to be held 25-27 July … (Helen is taking the photo!) This year was another great success but we never sit on laurels and are, as always, discussing new ways to keep the event fresh, bold and relevant. Keep an eye on the Symposium website in the New Year for updates.

Andy Thomas’s talk at the Glastonbury Symposium this August is now available to watch on YouTube. This year, with ETs and UFOs/UAP rising to the top of the strangeness agenda because of recent disclosures, he took a direct look at what this might really mean for all of us and how the adjacent rise of AI may be related, offering a usefully concise guide to these areas. Go to YouTube and search for ‘Andy Thomas - ETs and the AI Revolution’. Other 2024 Symposium videos will be released in the autumn.

Andy Thomas writes on behalf of the Glastonbury Symposium: The news of the death of the Symposium’s former sound technician Alan Bertrand, after an illness and only in his 50s, has come as a huge blow to those who knew him. A familiar face in the Glastonbury community in a number of capacities, Alan’s skills with the “techie stuff”, as we knew it, were particularly renowned and there were few local events that did not at some point call on his services.

Alan was involved in the Symposium in one capacity or another almost from the event’s beginnings and was our main sound engineer for many of those years. His diligence was admirable; he was among the very best of technicians. If something wasn’t sounding as it should, he would pace the auditorium, listening and adjusting until it did. Any flutter or fluctuation and he would be on his feet, hunting down the issue and riding faders. Alan was robust on the surface but sensitive underneath and struggled with health in later years, but this gave his personality depth and he channelled that sensitivity into his skills to its best effect.

Alan was also one of the funniest people we knew. His caustic but incredibly sharp sense of humour could leave people, literally, in stitches. Alan was never an alternative thinker himself, despite his bonds to the Symposium, and his mischievous and yet sometimes perceptive after-show deconstructions of any speakers he felt especially deserved them were hilarious even when we didn’t agree. But he would always give praise where he saw authenticity.

On a personal note, when I arrived to speak at my very first Glastonbury Symposium in our old Assembly Rooms venue precisely 30 years ago this summer, I was young, green and still finding my way in the world of mysteries research. I was a little nervous at the fascinating hubbub suddenly surrounding me but Alan was one of the first people to come up and speak to me. Something about his easy-going manner and joshing humour made me feel welcome and put me at ease. Who knows, had I been confronted with someone a little colder, events could have gone differently and I might not have found myself helping to run the Symposium just a few years after, an honour and responsibility that none of us take lightly.

Thank you, Alan, for everything you gave to all you knew, and to the Glastonbury Symposium specifically. You left an indelible mark on the event and your professionalism rubbed off onto all of us and your colleagues, some of whom still work with us today and excellently continue your legacy. Rest in peace and make sure the sound in the higher dimensions is of the very best quality. And the humour. With love from the whole Symposium team.

We are still coming down from this year's Glastonbury Symposium! Our 34th event was a huge success, with international attendees from many countries coming to join us for an intensive, thoughtful, contemplative, inspirational and joyful delve into areas generally ignored or denigrated by the mainstream. We hope that we really did "Expand Your Horizons" for those of you who came along or watched through live streaming.

And the weather was kind – nice, warm, but not overly hot – and the atmosphere in the town felt very special. These photos will hopefully convey something of the weekend, from setting up the venue to the event itself and the many wonderful speakers, and then having to take it all down again at the end ... We are already planning for 2025's event and news on that will be unveiled as we get a little closer.

In the meantime, look out for new entries in our podcast series, coming soon, sharing some audio highlights from this year's presenters. Video highlights will also be shared in due course. Thank you to all who supported us and to the whole organisational team, who worked so hard to help make 2024's Symposium such a special event.

Glastonbury Symposium ‘Expand Your Horizons’ speaker highlights 2024 – #17: Marcos Patchett. Marcos has practised as a medical herbalist since 2004, initially working from Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Therapy Rooms in London and in several leading universities since, including Westminster. Marcos is a student of Renaissance and classical astrology, and is the author of the acclaimed ‘The Secret Life of Chocolate’. On Saturday 27th July, at the Symposium Marcos will present ‘The Astral Apothecary – Plant Medicine from the Stars’, as he investigates the use of medicinal plants with astrology in traditional Western medicine and explores how “old-school” belief systems (such as humoral medicine, astrological rulerships, and sympathetic magic) can still be applied practically to support health and guide medical treatment. Full details and booking, including live-streaming tickets, are available on the Glastonbury Symposium website.

Glastonbury Symposium ‘Expand Your Horizons’ speaker highlights 2024 – #16: Palden Jenkins. Palden says: “I’m a beat-up old veteran in the movement for change, active in every decade since the 1960s. I still make noises through my blog, podcasts, writings and websites. I’ve written books, started and led projects, done big web-projects, worked as a humanitarian and peacemaker, been an astrologer, geomancer and croppie, and done psychic work and planetary healing.” Palden has been involved with the Symposium since its very beginning, and on Sunday 28th July at this year’s event he will present ‘Here Comes the Future – A Wider View of Current World Events’. Anyone who has ever seen Palden speak knows that with this presentation they will be in for a deeply engaging, heartfelt and highly insightful hour. Glastonbury Symposium ‘Expand Your Horizons’ speaker highlights 2024 – #15: Jason Porthouse and Nicola Foster. For years, Jason has led the Symposium mediations and closing ceremonies, but he is also a video editor and a teacher in Jan Day’s School of Being, a Spiritual Companion and an Instinctive Meditation teacher. Nicola is a relationship therapist and also a School of Being teacher, having witnessed the transformative power that conscious relating brings through the study of Ta**ra. On the Sunday of the Symposium, Jason and Nicola will present ‘Heart Of the Matter – Connecting with Others in a Changing World’. As we navigate challenging and difficult times, how can we ensure we stay true to ourselves and support one another? The Symposium takes place in the ‘heart chakra’ of the planet, so Jason and Nicola will be looking at the heart and what it means when we connect with others – physically, psychologically, and spiritually. How can simple techniques help us to maintain our equilibrium even when all around us seems to be changing at a speed we’ve never experienced before? Full details and booking, including live-streaming tickets, are available on the Glastonbury Symposium website.

Glastonbury Symposium ‘Expand Your Horizons’ speaker highlights 2024 – #13: Will Nott & Scott Newstead. Filmmakers Will and Scott followed the lives of a number of crop circle researchers, enthusiasts and sceptics over the course of the 2023 circle season. Will and Scott covered all the conflicting perspectives around the circles in an attempt to understand both the human and potentially more-than human behaviour surrounding the phenomenon. On Sunday 28 July, at the Symposium they will show premiere excerpts from their forthcoming full-length film, Dangerous Ground: Documenting the World of Crop Circles, which explores the ineffable nature of the circles, why humans strive to find answers and how we interact with each other when our belief systems are tested. This will be followed by a Q&A session led by Symposium co-MC Andy Thomas. Will is a journalist and filmmaker, whose first documentary, Unbroken, which covered the life of a bare-knuckle boxer, was nominated for a Webby Award and has been watched over 1.4 million times online. Scott is a director, camera operator and editor who also worked on Unbroken, as well as for the online TV channel pulped.com, Channel 4 and BBC 3. Full details and booking, including live-streaming tickets, are available on the Symposium website at: www.glastonburysymposium.co.uk

The first of what is hoped will be an ongoing series of podcasts featuring material from the Glastonbury Symposium ‘Expand Your Horizons’ conference has launched with an interview with Andy Thomas, who has been co-organiser of the Symposium for many years, illuminating the origins and intentions of the event. Presented by Mell Turford, this 20-minute chat is a good concise introduction to what the Symposium is all about and why its mission remains important in these times. With the 2024 event coming up between 26-28 July, Andy chats about the evolution of the Symposium from a small gathering focused on the crop circle mystery to a full conference covering a wide range of unexplained phenomena, new discoveries, issues around freedom of expression, ancient mysteries and spirituality. Future podcasts are planned to include audio excerpts highlighting some of the best speakers from recent Symposiums. Glastonbury Symposium ‘Expand Your Horizons’ speaker highlights 2024 – #12: Geoff Stray. Geoff is the author of the seminal Beyond 2012 and The Mayan and Other Ancient Calendars, together with other historical investigations. However, his concerns over clear official attempts to erase any traces of mysticism at France’s famous Chartres Cathedral means that his presentation at the Symposium on Saturday 27 July is entitled ‘Chartres Labyrinth – The Cover-Up’, embracing seventeen years of research. When visiting Chartres in 2006, Geoff found three circles of light falling onto the Labyrinth there and this started a unique investigation into how these lights were used in conjunction with marks around it to calculate the date of Easter. The result is a hitherto unknown cathedral ‘meridian’ that predates the first known one by 274 years. Geoff says: “Following a return to Chartres Cathedral on summer solstice 2023, the pieces of the puzzle have been fitted together and the lost knowledge has been salvaged – despite astonishing attempts by cathedral authorities and others to sabotage and obscure the revelation of a pre-Christian technology hidden in plain sight.” Full details and booking, including live-streaming tickets, are available on the Symposium website at: www.glastonburysymposium.co.uk

Glastonbury Symposium ‘Expand Your Horizons’ speaker highlights 2024 – #11: Sam X. Sam is the founder of Crypto Cafe and co-host of the Uncharted Territory podcast. Passionate about supporting people to stand in their own unique power, Sam presents on cryptocurrency and the financial reset and offers consultations, trainings, and troubleshooting to help empower people in understanding the emerging world of crypto and digital assets. On Friday 26 July, at the Symposium Sam will present ‘Cryptocurrency Demystified – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ and asks “What is the future of currency, and is crypto even really a currency? The term ‘cryptocurrency’ is largely a misnomer and is what often confuses people about this emerging space. Find out the truth in this lay person’s guide to the rise of crypto and blockchain technology – a technological paradigm shift that is revolutionising the world in ways that few people realise.” Full details and booking, including live-streaming tickets, are available on the Symposium website at: www.glastonburysymposium.co.uk
