Today at 2pm!

Building on BSC Expo 2024’s eco ethos, the ‘Thinking creatively about sustainability’ panel session, led by British Cinematographer’s Editor-in-Chief Zoe Mutter, will highlight the positive steps that individuals and the wider industry are taking to support productions and crew take positive actions around climate change.

From collaboration between departments through to the implementation of battery and hybrid solutions that support productions to drive down carbon emissions on set, the panel will share their creative sustainability approaches.

Taking place at 2pm Friday 16 February in the BSC Expo Seminar Theatre, the session will highlight the sustainability approaches adopted in relation to power - a key driver on carbon on set - and lessons learnt by the stellar panel below…

The BSC is determined to play its part in addressing the climate emergency and in line with the Paris agreement, limit global warming to 1.5C degrees over pre-industrial levels. Working in collaboration with other industry organisations, the BSC will challenge the film and TV industry to put sustainability at the heart of the creative process. The BSC Sustainability Committee was formed to help play individual and collective parts in this vital work.

‘Use of LED volumes, interactive LED lighting systems and how to handle lighting when shooting against an LED volume, especially in low light conditions or at night. Learning about image-based lighting, a new frontier in virtual production, and how to use tools to create additional reflections and interactive lighting effects. Importance of careful positioning of practical and movie lighting to avoid washing out the image or creating reflections on the LED screens. This panel is developed to deliver the knowledge to create professional-quality lighting in a virtual production environment.’

How the science of vision affects the art of cinematography

How do we see? In order to truly understand cinematography, Ian Murray had to go back to the greatest lens ever designed - the human eye. His research opened up a new universe of questions about how we create, perceive, and interpret images. He realised that, as technology constantly evolves our ability to create imagery, it’s never been more important to understand our own visual programming. Ian Murray has been successfully working as a commercial cinematographer for over 25 years, has won multiple awards, and is known internationally as a master of light.
