The history of The Emotions - Best Of My Love 🎶
The group started out in gospel music and were originally named the Hutchinson Sunbeams who toured the gospel circuit with their father Joe Hutchinson.
They eventually became an R&B/Soul act with a popular following in their hometown of Chicago. Soon being renamed as The Emotions, they signed with the Memphis-based Volt imprint of Stax Records in the late 1960s.
Best of my love was a song from their fourth studio album, Rejoice. It was composed by Maurice white and Al Mckay from Earth, Wind & Fire, and released as the album’s lead single on June 9, 1977.
The song was listed at #87 on The Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs. In 1977, it was the third biggest Pop song and the fifth biggest R&B song for the whole year.
“Best of My Love” won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Voca,l and also won an American Music Award for Favourite Soul/R&B Single. The track has been certified platinum in the US, and The Emotions were named by VH1 as one of the 18 most influential girl groups of all time.

But it wasn’t until the late 1800s roller skating really started to gain traction. In 1935, The Chicago Coliseum hosted the first transcontinental roller derby and from this, Chicago became the birthplace of what was to become a globally popular sport. Whilst the previous venues did play electric organ music music when people skated - it wasn’t until the 1970’s that the funky sounds of disco fused with roller skating to create something that people loved.The disco sounds of the 70’s lent themselves to a variety of dance moves and as a result saw a huge increase in people choosing this type of dance floor over the more traditional nightclub venue. This way to enjoy disco was something else and it became inseparable from the experience of roller skating, and many people still associate roller skating with disco to this day.Interestingly, during this period, it could be said that roller skating was one of the first all inclusive activities. ‘Imports, Etc.’ was a record shop in Chicago which has been credited with creating the term ‘house music’ 🎶 The owner, Paul Weisberg, began his career in the music business as a DJ, spinning at the Playboy Club in 1977. In March of 1981, Imports, Etc. opened as a storefront allowing DJs to purchase records that couldn’t be acquired through promotional channels. The store exclusively sold dance music, and its first employees were all disc jockeys from Chicago’s gay club scene. Brett Wilcots and his partner, Frank Sells, both DJed at Man’s Country, a gay bath, and became buyers at Imports, Etc. Wilcots also served as store manager.Paul Weisberg established a close relationship with Frankie Knuckles, DJ at the Warehouse. When Knuckles played a new record at the Warehouse, members of the crowd watched Paul Weisberg to see his reaction. The store established a “Warehouse Music” section to help customers find the records Knuckles was playing. Dick Guenther, another former DJ at Man’s Country, was in charge of the store’s merchandising and displays. Meet Michele Chiavarini (and Lola 🐾) who collaborated with us on the production of our latest track Brighter Days with Emeli Sandé Jools Holland and GeO Gospel Choir 🎶
Michele explains “I placed a basic beat around the acappella vocals and I played new chord for each section of the song. I then added a bassline, which I later replayed with a real bass guitarTo amplify the gospel vibe which is the distinctive trait of most of Revival’s releases. I played piano, organ and various ideas for the string arrangement, which was later handled by Pete Whitfield.
Finally, I handed all these elements to our main producer James F Reynolds , who developed the structure and arrangement of the song, added all the vocals and extra musical parts recorded at Abbey Road, with the addition of Jools Holland’s piano solo on top!
It was great working on this song, for a number a reasons. To start with, I have always been a big fan of Emeli Sande. She is a truly great singer, performer AND songwriter! Brighter days has a wonderful composition with beautiful lyrics and excellent vocals.
I love the whole Revival team! Everybody involved is the best at what they do and the nicest crowd I could wish to work with.”
