Delighted to attend the RDA Championships at Hartpury and present the Saddlers Jubilee Saddle to Grey Jack, an RDA pony from Northern Ireland.

The occasion was made even more special as the RDA President, HRH the Princess Royal was making her first public appearance since her accident.

The Heritage Crafts for saddlers are: Saddlery, Leatherworking, Horse Collar Making, Side Saddle Making, and Whip Making.
The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 2 August 2024.

NEW DEADLINE: 2 August 2024

Funders and sponsors are helping Heritage Crafts to make its biggest contribution to early-career craft training ever. The new bursaries are intended for talented new entrants and early-career practitioners, who might otherwise be lost to the heritage crafts sector as a result of not being able to afford hands-on craft training at a key moment in their early career. Of the 28 bursaries on offer:

• 11 is generally available to trainees facing financial hardship, which may be exacerbated by other barriers they are facing, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, Newby Trust, Anthony and Elizabeth Mellows Charitable Settlement, Kendrick Hobbs and Malcolm Gammie.
• 2 is allocated to Black and ethnically-diverse trainees, who remain under-represented in the sector, supported by the City & Guilds Foundation.
• 6 is allocated to veterans of the British Armed Services, supported by the Army Benevolent Fund and the Royal British Legion.
• 3 is allocated to trainees in Scotland, supported by the William Grant Foundation.
• 2 is allocated to trainees in Wales, supported by the Ashley Family Foundation.
• 1 is allocated to trainees in Sussex, supported by the Sussex Heritage Trust.
• 1 is allocated to decorative crafts, supported by the Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars.
• 1 is allocated to rural crafts, supported by the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust.
• 1 is allocated to an endangered craft featured on the Red List of Endangered Crafts, supported by Soane Britain.

Applicants are invited to apply once using a single application form, and will automatically be considered for the general funding pot as well as all of the categories that apply to them. Sam Laurie from One Menagerie is the next in the Prime Warden's showcase of Entrepreneurs. Sam is a member of Saddler's Company.

One Menagerie, based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, was formed in 2014 by Sam and co-founder Jo James, as a brand innovation agency. Being proactive through covid helped the company to survive and grow.

This is the seventh in Saddlers' series of showcasing entrepreneurs from within the Saddlers’ Company. One Menagerie, is based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

As part of National Volunteers Week, Saddlers’s Company hosted XLP’s Volunteers Celebration in Saddlers’ Hall.

XLP supports over 4,000 young people struggling with daily issues while growing up on inner-city London estates.

Prime Warden, Hugh Taylor spoke about how Saddlers’ Company is proud to be associated with, and provide support to XLP. Supporting inner city education, inclusion, and equestrian activities. The Company has also introduced a L1 Leather Skills Course to make opportunities in leather sectors accessible to more people.

Dan Shillingford, one of the Heads of Youth Work, stated amongst other points, ‘good things happen because people volunteer.’

Bayes Business School - Business for Creatives Course

As part of the Prime Warden’s year of entrepreneurship, Saddlers Company was delighted to welcome the attendees to the first day of this 3 day programme at Bayes Business School last week. We’re very thankful to Bayes for creating this course especially for craft businesses.

The programme gave this great cohort of attendees the opportunity to network, encourage and challenge peers. Learning from 5 Bayes lecturers who are leaders in their fields; the attendees were introduced to new ways of thinking, evaluating, and planning.

Feedback after the first day included that; there was a lot of good information to process and it was appreciated having a structure to hang thoughts off. There was interest in prioritising, pricing/valuing work and achieving a balance between what they like doing and what brings in the most money.

Through the course of the day, it became apparent how much common ground there was between the saddlers, and other leather workers.

We look forward to the next two days of the course and seeing where this new knowledge takes attendees’ businesses in both saddlery and other craft industries.

Alix was the first female saddler in Walsall, beginning her career with Master Saddler Keith Bryan. She has worked at the bench of many of the well-known Walsall brands and is still in the trade, albeit in the South West where she repairs and fits saddles.

Also delighted to award LS Coleman-Pratt the annual Saddlers prize (which is awarded to the Junior Rating whom is most deserving for the credit they have brought on themselves and the Ship.)

And congratulations to Georgia and Spano for winning the Saddlers' Prize at Badminton Horse Trials 🥳

Georgia Bartlett and Spano De Nazca have come up the levels together, winning double team silver at junior level. Their first Badminton Horse Trials last year didn't quite work out when the diminutive Spano De Nazca tired on the heavy ground and Georgia pulled up, so we're delighted it came off this time. They finished 28th with a jumping clear across country.

A lot of people comment how late I tend to stay at weddings but if there is a great party and a dancefloor to match, I will stay and capture moments like these!

Taken in November 2016, at & Steve's wedding reception at the lovely Saddlers Company & Saddlers Hall just off Cheapside in London. A great party was had and enjoyed by all! It was freezing outside but everyone was keeping warm inside rocking out to the fantastic band!
