We may play host to enchanting woodland weddings in the summer months, but in the winter we are a family just trying to look after our little corner of the Great British countryside. Lots of hard work today clearing the storm damage to give nature a helping hand. It was beautiful to see that the woods are waking up from their winter snooze, the bluebells are poking through the leaves, the primroses are beginning to bloom, the trees are budding and the bird song is serene.

And yes we put Samson out of his ball bobbing misery after we had laughed at him for being such a clumsy dipstick!

All the couples who have a wedding in the Woods are given a tree to celebrate their marriage. We very much look forward to welcoming Marysia and James back to see how their mighty oak tree has grown over the years to come. Perhaps a picnic under their tree on their wedding anniversary amongst the bluebells. What a stunning day for this gorgeous couple 💕

We are delighted to be teaming up with for a bluebell meditation this spring. In the language of flowers, the bluebell is a symbol of humility, gratitude and everlasting love. These are values that we will explore through a guided meditation with Lucy to help boost our wellbeing and remind ourselves of the importance of self-care.

First snowdrops are peaking out through the leaves today. Apparently it was customary for village maidens to gather bunches of Snowdrops and wear them as a symbol of their purity on February 2nd, which was Candlemas - the feast of the Virgin Mary!

Big boy toys were out today clearing the ash trees that had to be felled due to ash dieback. Thank you to all the friends of the Woods at Oakley who are supporting our fight against this devastating disease.

Ready for a busy winter of carefully removing the trees with Ash die back, ready to replant more British trees in the spring. All events held at the Woods at Oakley are funding this vital work to protect British woodland which is under great threat.

Feeling so blessed to be able to walk with my dog Delilah and cat Saturday through the woods today. It boosts my mood helping me feel less stressed and more relaxed. It’s not just me that experiences this, research has shown that spending time in green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing. For example, doing things like growing food or flowers, exercising outdoors or being around animals can have lots of positive effects.

This mythical woodland wedding feast was inspired by the natural surroundings of the wood. We love it when our couples forage for unique objects in the woods to style their wedding. Be that curtains of ivy to mark the entrance to the bridal path, heart shaped logs to present the wedding cake on or giant Jenga made from our fallen trees. Connecting with the woodland in your own special way is unforgettable.

Deadwood is a crucial component of woodland ecosystems. Not only does it play an essential role in sustaining biodiversity, but it also delivers important ecosystem services. Apparently a tidy wood is not a healthy wood, another great excuse for not attempting to manicure our wonderfully wild wood.

Whilst we put in the mixed hedgerow to attract wildlife we weren’t expecting it to become home to this lame fawn. It’s been here a few days now, hopefully once rested it will be confident to return to the woods. But for now it seems happy and safe in the garden
