Well the RBL hall was looking rather swish on our Friday show night for a wedding the following day. It was a lovely evening, with the sun shining.
We started off the evening on a sad note, to learn of the passing of Elsa Swanson. Our thoughts are with Elsa’s family and friends.
John Permenter started his cabaret with “Texas Fiddle Man”, which is his signature tune. “Louisiana Saturday Night” followed with John asking us to clap and get our hands out of each other’s pockets!
John spoke about the recent Father’s Day in America, where his son and grandson live. “Shoe Box” reminds him of his son. The words of the song were beautiful, “Take a picture with your father, as some day he’ll be gone”.
Tennessee Ford was one of John’s dad’s favourite artists. “The Shot Gun Boogie” came next, followed by George Jones’ last hit “Choices”.
The last few songs during the cabaret were “Louisiana Witch” with some audience participation for the screaming, “Siege of Alamo” and finally, a favourite of mine “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”. What a performance!
The snowball, which sat at £110, was won by Caroline Gulloch who was in the hall. Well done Caroline! Next month it’s back to £50.
Next on stage was New Outfit; Maggie, Drew and Shannon. A husband, wife and daughter trio. Maggie and Shannon have performed in our club previously, it was Drew’s first time. Maggie and Shannon were looking fabulous in their sparkly outfits (as was John Permenter). Drew couldn’t have got the “wear something sparkly” email!
“On The Road Again” started off the cabaret, then one of Maggie’s favourites “Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses”. Maggie said that it was nice to be back; it’s been a while. Shannon sang “Girl Crush”next, then “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. Maggie stated she had her tight pants on to reach Shannon’s high notes!
“Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man”, “Love Is Alive” followed with Maggie stating that “The old wifey can hold the notes at the end of the song – just!”.
Shannon sang “Ghost In This House” which she sang for Keith MacLeod. A beautiful and haunting song which Maggie said that she cried when she first heard Shannon sing it. The cabaret ended with Maggie singing “What I’ve Got In Mind” – we didn’t want to know what Maggie has in her mind, according to Maggie!
It was a very happy birthday to Ann Mackay, who Ally Gray informed us is the same age as he is. Not sure how old Ally is!
Back on stage, John Permenter sang “Thank God I’m A Country Boy”, “Long Live The Blues”, to name but a few and finished with “Orange Blossom Special”. John’s claim to fame is that he has played two rounds of golf with Glen Campbell before it started raining and the game was abandoned.
There were many lucky raffle winners: Veronica Farquhar, Mary Johns, John Swanson, Gina Dunnett, Ann Mackay (birthday girl), Margaret Mackay, Mac Calder, Fiona Fraser, George Sanders, Veira Sutherland and Libby Brown. Well done to all.
Ally introduced New Outfit back onto the stage, stating he often used to hear his wife saying “I need a new outfit”! “Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad”, “Take Me Down To The Little White Church” and “Mississippi” (hope I’ve spelt that right!) followed. Maggie then invited Keith MacLeod onto the stage for a duet with Shannon and then one with Maggie, “I Fall To Pieces”. Keith will be joining New Outfit for their performance at the Triple C’s All Day Show in October (contact Isobel Beattie for tickets and Catherine Cowan/Susan Rennie for bus information to/from Thurso to the show).
Finally “Open That Door” finished the evening with Maggie dedicating the song to her brother Mikey, who we all wish a continuing speedy recovery. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Look forward to seeing you all at our August show. Details are on our poster, created, as always, by the very talented Steve Efemey.
Remember, finishing time going forward is 12:30am.
Until the next time………….. Leisa
