Wow! Rural Voices was just brilliant! Thank you so much to everyone who came to enjoy the captivating talk by Charles Dowding. There was a great convivial atmosphere, lots of people from the village and beyond came on their own and met friends or made new friends over breakfast, others came in groups of friends or family. A wonderful team of volunteers helped village hall committee members cook and serve breakfast, welcome guests and do the washing up (thank you!!). Everyone left full of food and exciting ideas for their gardens and we are so excited for the next event with Julian Hight now! If you would like to volunteer to help let us know, or to sign up to the village hall newsletter, visit the website!

Just a note on our tasty breakfasts so you know what to expect for future events. It won't always be exactly the same but we will always prioritise local suppliers and lovely fresh produce. Here was the menu from this one:

Omnivores-
Bacon + sausage from September House Small Holdings
(Horningsham)
Egg from Pythouse Farm (Tisbury)
Bubble and Squeak with kale from Vallis Veg (Frome)
Baked Beans
Toast (gf on request)

Herbivores-
Homemade veggie sausages with Hodmedod fava beans
Portobello mushroom
Egg from Pythouse Farm (Tisbury) or vegan tofu scramble
Bubble and Squeak with kale from Vallis Veg (Frome)
Baked Beans
Toast (gf on request)

Hope to see you next time!

Just over a week to go until our first RURAL VOICES event and there are still a few tickets left, so make sure you jump in now and snap them up! https://events.humanitix.com/rural-voices-brunch-and-brain-food
We are so lucky (and a little starstruck!) to have the brilliant joining us this month to talk about COMPOST - the subject of his new book - and no-dig gardening. What an absolute treat!
Some people have asked why we're doing Rural Voices at 9am on a Saturday, so let us explain! We took inspiration from a very popular event in another Wiltshire village, so we know that it works and is a fantastic way to kick off the weekend. The deal is that when you turn up at 9am you immediately sit down to a fantastic cooked breakfast. All the ingredients are sourced locally, including incredible bacon and sausages from for the meat eaters and home-made bubble + squeak and veggie sausages for the vegetarians/vegans. After breakfast, you can relax with a cup of tea or freshly ground coffee and enjoy a fascinating talk from one of our carefully curated programme of speakers. Charles Dowding this month, in December and Dr Olivia Chapple in February 2025 (and more to come after that if all goes well!). At 11am, we'll wave you off to enjoy the rest of your weekend feeling refreshed, sated and inspired!

FIREWORKS!!
5-7.30pm 5th November
We can't wait for the 2024 village bonfire and fireworks display, its definitely one of the highlights of the village hall calendar each year.
Horningsham residents and friends are warmly invited to join us *from 5pm* (change from what we originally advertised) for the lighting of the bonfire. There will be hotdogs and a bar, then at 6.15pm we'll enjoy a beautiful fireworks display - a yearly gift from our friends the

Have you booked yet for this brilliant event on Monday?

Horningsham and Maiden Bradley have got together to host GREENER GARDENERS' QUESTION TIME at 7pm on 21st October at Horningsham Village Hall.

How does it work?
There isn’t going to be a formal panel, instead it will be an informal session where people can ask questions and get answers from within the community - a sort of knowledge sharing event. There are so many brilliant gardeners and nature lovers in our area - this is an incredible resource!

How do I ask a question?
Ideally, we would love people to send in questions in advance - email them to Andy at [email protected]

What is the theme?
The theme is about ‘greener’ gardening as it’s part of the Greener Maiden Bradley & Horningsham, but all general gardening questions are welcome.

How do I book?
You can book on the Horningsham Village Hall website (link in bio) for £3.50 or buy a ticket on the door for £4.

Looking back at the wonderful Harvest Supper last weekend - what a joyful night! The Village Hall was absolutely packed with villagers and friends of all ages. We were spoilt with beautiful autumnal table decorations 🍂, absolutely delicious food 🍽, neverending raffle prizes 🤣 and great company.
The biggest thanks goes of course to the inimitable Liz Glover, chair of the Parish Council and chef extraordinaire, who brought together a fantastically talented and efficient team to cook a beautifully tender beef stew with perfect dumplings and a tasty mediterranean vegetarian bake, all with lovely veg on the side. Scrumptious desserts were cooked by various locals. Thanks also to Steve Crossman who hosted the evening with his usual flair and also generously donated the excellent beef for the stew (he has more available for sale from Mill Farm, just give him a shout!). Thank you to everyone who contributed to the raffle, especially who made one young guest very happy indeed! Many people were involved in setting up, decorating, collecting supplies, cooking, serving food, staffing the bar, clearing up - grateful thanks to you all for bringing the village together in such a lovely way.

HORNINGSHAM ART HUB?
Are you a visual artist looking for a supportive community?
We have had some exciting chats with arts promoter Stephanie Edwards and artist Miles Cantelou Art recently! They would love to start a regular meet-up to connect with like-minded artists and become part of a vibrant community where we can share ideas, perfect our craft and exhibit diverse artwork at regular shows and we all agree that Horningsham Village Hall would be a wonderful place to base this creative hub!
All are welcome, whatever your medium - whether you paint, sculpt or blow glass we can provide a platform to showcase your talents and connect with fellow creatives.
If you feel motivated, contact Stephanie via [email protected]

EEEK! We forgot to tell you about Yin Yoga! Bethan is running this super accessible but also totally amazing class as a community offering, so its just £5 per class (or £3 concessions) .
We pinched this photo from the Guardian - hope they don't mind - but it came from this really helpful article that tells you all about why Yin Yoga is different to other kinds of yoga. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/jan/05/yin-yoga-calm-mind-stretch-body-slow - check stories for a clickable link!
It is soothing, slow-paced, meditative and transformative. So JOIN US at 5.15pm every Tuesday (that's today by the way) in the Village Hall (don't forget to bring a mat.

06/10/2024

Horningsham Village Hall is a beautiful and well-loved community resource but the building itself is in urgent need of work to ensure that it can sustain its important role in the village both in the near future and for generations to come. Thanks to generous support from Longleat and Savills , we have recently had a preliminary survey done. This highlighted that in order to ensure the ongoing safety and functionality of the Hall, we will need to undertake major work to the roof, the heating and electrical systems and some structural elements over the next five years. We also want to make significant improvements to the toilets, the kitchen, storage spaces and interior decor. This work is essential in order to make the Hall a more welcoming, accessible and joyful space for everyone, one which connects across all the existing clubs and activities and also inspires new ways of coming together with friends and neighbours.

We anticipate that we will need to raise at least £100,000 to complete these works. As the full picture of the costs becomes more clear, we will share this transparently with the community so that we can all work together to make it possible.

At last month's coffee morning, at the suggestion of the Horningsham Residents' Action Group we tasted apples from gardens around Horningsham - there are so many varieties and some were tastier than others! There are so many apple trees in the village and some weren't quite ripe yet so we thought we might do it all over again. Come along to the October coffee morning on 20th from 10-12 with apples from your garden and have a taste.
Have you got a glut of apples? Click through the pics for a brown sauce recipe that we're making for the breakfast talks.

We are so lucky to have professional trainer Sam offering this great community class which is open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels. Throughout September, it has been completely free* and has seen a wonderfully intergenerational group form. Tomorrow, there will be tea and coffee available afterwards (and banana cake if Cherry gets round to it...) so those who want to can stay and chat.
*From next month, the classes will be £5 which is still an amazing bargain.

A little reminder that it's all happening in Horningsham tomorrow (24th September) with not one but TWO special visits! First up, Police Community Support Officer Lukasz Kolasinski of the Warminster Rural Beat team will be bringing their mobile police station to the entrance to the Village Hall field from 1-3pm so that we can all get to know each other a bit better. THEN the Longleat Estates, Property and Forestry teams will be hosting a drop in and ‘Meet the Team’ event for Horningsham residents between 4pm and 6pm inside the Village Hall. They can't wait to answer questions and update us all on their plans for the coming years. They are even bringing tea and cake!

How d'ya like them apples?!🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏
Don't forget that tomorrow (Sunday 15th September) from 10-12 it's the Village Hall coffee morning and Horningsham Residents' Action Group are inviting you to join them there for APPLE DAY! If you have an apple tree in your garden, grab a few apples on your way out and bring them down to the hall, where we will be doing a village-wide apple tasting survey. Do you have the tastiest tree in Horningsham? Come and share apples, apple recipes, apple tree-care tips and (of course) tea and coffee.
AND if you come down a bit early (9.30am), Sam will be offering a FREE TASTER SESSION of his brilliant Body Balance classes (normally at 9am on Wednesdays). 🙆🙆‍♂
ALL ARE WELCOME.

We are really pleased that these fantastic exercise classes will be led by Horningsham resident Sam PT in the Village Hall from Wednesday this week. What a brilliantly inclusive and affordable offering! Here is what Sam has to say about them:
"I am excited to be starting a new ‘Body Balance’ exercise class at the Horningsham Village Hall this Wednesday. The class is 45min long and will focus on movements and mobilisations that improve fitness, posture, flexibility, core strength and the alleviation of pain and stress from the body. The class is particularly aimed at those new to exercise and/or have pain or stress in their body. I am a great deal of experience however in teaching multilevel classes to a range of abilities and levels. All are welcome as everyone can improve their posture, flexibility and body symmetry.

"A little about me. My name is Sam and I live at the end of White Street with my partner Winnie and our son Timo. I live next door to my parents Nicky and Bob who I am sure many of you know. I have over 20 years experience in the fitness industry and before moving to Horningsham I ran an exercise referral and weight management scheme in London.

"I look forward to meeting many of you soon!"

Details of the class:
Body Balance with Sam
When: Every Wednesday
Time: 9-9.45am
Where: Horningsham Village Hall
Cost: £5 per class. No booking necessary.
