After a rewarding 10 years of Bootmakers, in which we've seen it grow from strength to strength, becoming part of the community, and serving families and schools alike, we feel that it is time for us to focus on other projects. As you know, we have been refurbishing our building for some months now and we know many of you are wondering what is going on. The delay comes down to our being very conflicted. On the one hand, Bootmakers is a large and enjoyable part of our lives but on the other, the break has made us realise that we are not getting any younger and we do not have the time to continue running the workshop. This means that we have taken the difficult decision not to reopen. We will continue takeaway pizzas each evening except Mondays. We would like to thank everyone for their support, whether it be donating their scrap, booking in their children, asking us to participate in school and community events, or simply cheering us on. We have loved these years watching your children find their creativity, and seeing their confidence and ideas grow. A community project such as Bootmakers couldn’t function without such encouragement, and we feel enormously grateful to have been supported in this way. Thank you!
Ian and Safia

My non-profit Kashfi's Children - which sends books and animations into war zones -- is looking for volunteer narrators to record readings of my father's children's books, in languages other than English. Record at home is fine (some of our narrators sit under the stairs to block out traffic noise)! We have scripts in 20 or so languages, so if you are happy narrating in a language other than English, please message me!

Anyone who knows us at Bootmakers might have noticed that we like to take old things and give them a second chance. Ian and I are happy to say that this sentiment seems to have trickled down to the next generation. For the past 6 months, our son Archie O’Shaughnessy (Sandy the F4) and a friend have been doing up a 1985 Renault 4 van, with a view to using it to deliver vital educational books to school-age children in the Moroccan desert. In mid-February, they’ll join a humanitarian convoy made up exclusively of Renault 4’s – each carrying a load of school supplies. The other teams are almost exclusively French drivers as the project has been run for the past 27 years from France to Merzouga. Archie and co-driver Alf have worked tirelessly to get the van and cargo ready in time – greatly aided by local businesses such as Wincanton Print and Whitehall Garage. They have also managed to raise 70% of the funds they need. But sadly, an engine fail just before Christmas, set them back and they are now racing against the clock to get the repairs done in time. To kickstart the fundraising, they are urgently in need of private donations (made to their Crowdfunder – the link of which appears below) and even better, business sponsors. Wincanton Print has incredibly generously offered them a huge reduction on the printing of stickers for the van’s bodywork so that they can offer business sponsors the chance to have their company logos displayed on the Renault 4 as it makes the 6,000 km trip. They’ve already sold several of these stickers, but they desperately need to sell more. Any local businesses interested in supporting them can contact Archie by text on 07880342737 and any private donors are very welcome to donate here: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/save-sandy

Now that we've finally settled on our kid's workshops this holiday, here's one for adults and teens. Rag wreath making has to be one of the most relaxing and impressive crafts we do. The results are always outstanding and the wreaths are surprisingly easy to make. Add this to wood-fired pizza (and bring a bottle if you like) and it has all the makings of a great evening. Come alone, come with friends - or if the date doesn't work for you, get a group together and we'll do our best to open especially for you.

BOOTMAKERS WORKSHOP
We hope your children are bugging you to bring them to the town's lantern parade on Friday! As you probably know, Thanks to a council grant, Bootmakers ran four lantern-making sessions for the public and two sessions for the schools this year. This means we have over 100 lanterns - plus a huge one of our own.
Anyone who made a lantern in the public sessions should drop by to collect theirs from 4pm this Friday (24th) and anyone who would like to take one of the ones we made with the help of the school children is welcome to come to the workshop from 6pm to collect a lantern (while stocks last)! We all need to be up the High Street ready to start walking down by 6.30pm.

School heads will announce the school sessions in assembly. The lanterns made during these free sessions will feature in Wincanton Lantern Parade on 24th November. We don't take bookings for these sessions, they are run on a first come, first serve basis.

October half term is almost here! And what a strange one it is this year. The local school term dates don't quite line-up so we'll have three weeks of daytime activities on offer. This timetable is for our drop-off sessions (which are aimed at children aged 8 and over who are happy to be dropped off). If you have younger children, or if you would like to stay, you can book in for a family table. If you are booking a family table, your kids can make whatever they like when they come in. If they are being dropped off, there are specific activities lined up for the session. Please book them in as soon as you can, because we hate turning children away! Booking is on 07471153418

Anyone got an empty room they'd like to transform into a craft room? We recently looked at an incredible stash of card-making and craft equipment - a really significant collection providing all you would need to set-up at home. It's too good for our needs. But if you are interested in buying the collection (for a fraction of what it is worth) message me and I can put you in touch with the person selling.

After a very busy summer in the workshop, with drop offs and family tables virtually everyday, we're ready for term time. Which means school visits, families crafting together on weekends, some great community events in the diary and PARTIES - oh how we miss parties in the summer!
Parties were back with a bang last weekend with a 'putting babies to bed' party, with added unicorns and princess castles. That's what happens when you let the birthday girl choose the activity. So glad we listened to you - it was a great party!

Anyone wishing to book in for adult crafting evenings (during the week or on weekends), or children's parties and family crafting on the weekend, please text us on our workshop number, which is 07471153418

More good news!
Bootmakers has made it into the finals for Best Children’s business in the UK, in the Muddy Awards 2023.
An astonishing 77,000 businesses were nominated in several categories and 800,000 votes cast in 2023. We’re now in the top 5 finalists in our category – nationwide. No need to vote – the judges do the rest. We want to thank everyone who voted for us.
And say that we are still taking bookings for our family tables and drop-offs.
For anyone who doesn’t know Bootmakers, we run scrap-based creative sessions lead by a young team of artists. Because we use scrap, our prices are really reasonable.
