SHOW REVIEW: Last week, thousands of attendees from across Europe and beyond attended Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo and were able to immediately gauge the key trends and technologies that will shape the future of the sector as it pushes ahead with ambitious goals to slash greenhouse gas emissions and move closer to net-zero operation by 2050. From the latest advances in LTO chemistry for batteries, through to a sharp increase in interest in the potential of green ammonia as a fuel, the Expo provided the perfect opportunity to take the industry’s temperature, while sourcing completely new solutions and partners.

CONFERENCE INSIGHTS
A (paid for) conference took place alongside the (free-to-attend) exhibition, featuring over 100 expert speakers from organizations including Port of Amsterdam, Damen Shipyards, Polish Register of Shipping, Green City Ferries, DNV - Maritime, P&O Ferries, Norwegian Maritime Authority, Wärtsilä Corporation and Brittany Ferries.

Parking at the RAI 🚘
Are you planning to visit RAI Amsterdam by car? You can book and purchase your parking ticket in advance. This way, you are assured of a parking space, and, having paid already, you can easily enter and exit the parking garage without pauses or delays. For more information on getting to the show, please visit the venue’s website.

Getting to the venue by tram, metro and bus
Tram 4 runs between the center of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Centraal and the RAI (stop at Europaplein).

Metro 52 will take you from Amsterdam Centraal station or Amsterdam Zuid station to Amsterdam RAI station. Get off the metro at the Europaplein station and exit in front of the RAI.

Metro 50 runs between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Gein and stops at Amsterdam RAI station.

From Amstel station, you can take Metro 51 (Amsterdam RAI station), Bus 62 (stop at Europaplein) or Bus 65 (stop at Scheldeplein).

Megawatt charging of ships – connections beyond the hull – Peter Rampen, principal research engineer, Damen Shipyards

We also recommend checking out the views of a major shipbuilder: Damen already has experience with developing and realizing charging systems for fully electric vessels, with shore-side charging solutions developed for each specific ship type. For the next step in the electrification of shipping, it believes ‘charging as a service’ has to be available in locations where these ships are operating. This will require standardized charging solutions for interoperability. Could the (megawatt) charging standards for automotive applications offer a promising basis for such a maritime charging standard? However, it is often the case that currently, the local power grid is not always sufficient to supply the required megawatt-scale peak powers. Damen has a solution, called Energy Hubs – consisting of shoreside microgrids with local storage, optional local power generation and a reduced power grid connection, including communications.
