A snippet of our head gardener Mitch trimming back a Creeping Fig (Ficus pumila). Just like hedges, they look and grow better when trimmed lightly and regularly.
Mitch's three top tips for better trimming results:
1. Do not to trim in times of cold wet weather.
2. Cut out any dead or diseased growth.
3. Make sure your tools are nice and sharp.

A little time-lapse of our Head Gardener Mitch giving an ornamental crabapple tree, Malus 'Ellerslie', a summer pruning ✂️
Mitch is pruning off the summer water shoots to help the tree retain its canopy shape. On a fine day in winter it will have another pruning to maintain its health and further enhance its beautiful form 🌳
10 years of volunteering at Tūpare
It's National Volunteer Week! We caught up with Ruth, who is celebrating 10 years of volunteering at Tūpare next month! WOW
For Ruth, Tūpare has always held fond memories of visiting as a child, when Sir Russell Matthews would have open days for the community.
So after moving back to Taranaki in 2011, she attended a guided walk of the gardens and on discovering they were always on the hunt for volunteers, she decided to put her hand up.
10 years later, and with many friends met along the way, Ruth says this is her happy place and she feels totally privilleged to be a part of making Tūpare such a special place for visitors to enjoy.
Ruth volunteers one day per week, helping Mitch and the team out with many gardening tasks that help to keep the gardens looking spectacular.
Watch Ruth's story here. A big big thank you to Ruth and to all of the other volunteers who help to keep Tūpare looking beautiful!
