When a person refuses to meet our needs and standards in a relationship, the obvious scapegoat is them.

But just because it's easier to direct the cause of our unhappiness away from ourselves doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

After all, we all know the only person who can save us from ourselves . . . is ourselves. We must therefore be brave and ask the more challenging question: "Why am I putting up with this kind of behavior?"

A relationship is not a hostage situation, and although we might hope others will respect our time and energy, it ultimately always come down to us to enforce it.

Looking within can be painful, but it's essential in order to move forward and break toxic patterns.
