BACKGROUND
“Lyran”; “Lyre”; “The Lyre” - the instrument poised atop musikpaviljongen in Lunds stadspark, denoting the building’s original purpose: musical performances. Musikpaviljongen is the last remnant of Lundauställningen, an exhibition for art, crafts and industry which took place in 1907. The pavilion was built to house an ensemble, and the ensemble played every day of the exhibition. Ther
e is little to suggest that it has had any major usage since then; instead standing as one of the park’s most splendid ornaments and a piece of history that is closed to the public. And so in our project Lyran, the lyre serves as a symbol for a revival of the tradition surrounding the pavilion. It is also a link between a cultural heritage of more than 100 years past and the contemporary culture in Lund which finally finds a stage in this beautiful old space. CONCEPT
Lyran is a project created by musician and composer Lloyd Degler. Lloyd has previously been responsible for a number of music projects, including a community-based recording scheme in Brussels, Belgium and more recently a collaboration with the Saxenborn Singers and a student ensemble from the Malmö Academy of Music. The visual identity and experience design for lyran is brought to you by Hamide Design Studio, based in Copenhagen. We have the pleasure of welcoming Şeyda and Seda Özçetin, the founders of and designers at Hamide Design Studio, as they will also attend the event. Visit hamide.co to see what they do! The concept is simple: acoustic performances in the pavilion, followed by a jam session in which the musicians in the audience are invited to play. Once past the beautiful old exterior, guests will be treated to an interior of modern design, re-sculptured for every lyran by Hamide Design Studio. The transition from the old world of the exhibition and contemporary Lund is thus complete. The scene set in this space is a major element of the experience. Aside our resident designers from Hamide Design Studio, who have also designed all of the posters for lyran and the banner and logo for our page and the Facebook event, we also have the in-house band I Only Fight Giants. Comprised of four members (Lloyd Degler - double bass/vocals, Mehmet Ali Arslan - guitar/vocals, Anna Burenius - guitar/percussion/vocals and Philip Hartman - flute/vocals) and growing, the band will set the tone for the nights and encourage other musicians to join in the jam at the end. PRACTICAL DETAILS:
The evening is completely free. Light refreshments will be provided. Please ensure you arrive in good time, as space is limited. During the colder periods of the year, the pavilion will be heated for the comfort of all those involved. Please note that as all performances are entirely acoustic (i.e., no amplification whatsoever), we ask that the audience maintain a respectful volume whilst artists are performing, purely so they can be heard! We sincerely hope you enjoy the evening, and if you are interested in performing at a future lyran, or simply have any comments/questions/suggestions, please get in touch! ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This project would not have been possible without Lund municipality's willingness to help and indeed to open up this space to us. We extend our thanks, particularly to Lars Brobeck with whom we had direct contact. Special thanks to Mehmet Ali Arslan for the ideas he contributed to the project.
