West Branch Haul Road. Millinocket, Maine. 1972.

The Great Northern Paper logging road was a privately owned, 96-mile route that began just northwest of Millinocket and ran to Maine's border with Quebec.

Also known as "The Golden Road," on which Great Northern Paper ran their last log drive in 1971.

Since then, the road has become a popular route for campers, hunters, fishermen and other lovers of the northern Maine woods.

Take a look at this colorized photo that shows the difference in scale between two-foot and standard gauge (4 feet, 8.5 inches between the rails) railroading.

This photo from Bridgton Junction (Hiram), Maine dates from the 1920s and shows historic Bridgton & S**o River Railroad #5 against a Maine Central Railroad steam engine. Bridgton Junction was where the two-foot Bridgton & S**o River met with the standard gauge Maine Central for connections to Portland and the wider world. Passengers and cargo would transfer between the standard gauge railroad and the two-foot narrow gauge.

Don't let the smaller size fool you: despite their diminutive stature, Maine two-foot locomotives were designed to be powerful, sure-footed haulers, especially around tight curves and steep grades like we have in Maine.
