Behind Our Name // June 12 ♥️

Richard and Mildred Loving, an in*******al couple, got married in Virginia on June 2nd, 1958. In*******al marriage was illegal there, and the couple was arrested on July 14, 1958. They fled to Maryland, and later became the plaintiffs in Loving v. Virginia, challenging Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law. On June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court unanimously decided in favor of the lovings, and in*******al marriage was legalized in the United States.

A Day in June celebrates unions of all types whether the marriage is in*******al, q***r, trans, disabled, or deviant from the status quo in another way! Sometimes it takes courage to honor your love by marriage but at A Day in June, we’ve got your back. We’re here to honor your love, regardless of what it looks like. ♥️

This , we want to honor the life and work of Frank Masandrea, a premier bridal designer from the 1970s-1980s who died of AIDS in 1988. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​During the era of bridal fashion, Masandrea's designs were elegant, thoughtful, and timeless. Many of these designs would be just at home at a wedding in 2024 as they were in the 1980s. (The flocked-tulle gown in the first image is a personal favorite!)

Mr. Masandrea was born in 1947 and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended college at . While he was still a student, he worked part-time in Lord & Taylor's display department. As noted, the store's bridal buyer "was so impressed with his freelance designs that he was immediately commissioned to do an exclusive bridal collection for the store. The collection brought him instant recognition," and his designs were soon displayed in the store's main windows.

After graduating, he continued designing bridal attire, most notably for The Diamond Collection. In 1972, he received Bride’s Magazine's award for best bridal designer. His designs were worn by countless brides until his death in 1988.

A few days ago we packed up a HUGE bundle of dresses + bridal accessories for donation to Brides for a Cause! We have 8 giant boxes of wedding attire ready to ship out but we’re always anticipating our next donation (we accumulate a LOT in our small shop). ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​🤍

We’re so grateful that Brides for a Cause aligns with ADIJ’s values and that we can support their important work collecting and reselling wedding dresses to raise funds for a variety of women-focused organizations. We love any opportunity to connect with others who also envision coming together to make a difference in the bridal world!

It's June!! June is -- for obvious reasons -- a very special month for us, and we wanted to kick it off by wishing a happy Pride to our wonderful community! ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​During bridal appointments, people often ask me what my wedding dress looked like. Ask and ye shall receive. This is a photo of my wife and me when we got married in 2015, and I thought it especially appropriate to share the photo at the beginning of Pride month. My gown was the Seaside by Lela Rose , and I love it as much today as I did then.

The bridal industry has changed SO MUCH in the past decade, and it's much easier to find LGBTQIA+-friendly spaces today than it was when we were shopping for our dresses in 2014. While we still have a long way to go, this is definitely a cause for celebration!

I want to take a moment today to give a shout-out to our friends at Kelly's Closet , who made my dress-shopping experience so wonderful back then. (I won't name the local boutique where my wife got her dress, but we definitely did not have the same welcoming experience there.)

Even today, we are one of the only openly q***r-owned bridal shops in the entire country. We are proud to be a space where our LGBTQIA+ friends and family can show up as themselves. No matter what your gender identity or relationship structure, if you want to wear a wedding dress to your wedding, we want to be part of your journey.

Happy National Pet Day! It's no secret that we are huge animal fans at ADIJ (pets outnumber people by 3 to 1 on our team!), and we love seeing all of the creative ways that our clients include their furry friends in their weddings. But our favorite is still the custom cat koozies and cat stickers from Tory & Knox's celebration last fall. 😻 Who wouldn't want to go home with one of these as a wedding favor?!

REAL WEDDING WEDNESDAY | Victoria + Grant 🤍

We are in love with the wedding photos from our gorgeous bride 😍 Victoria and Grant got married at Villa Woodbine in Miami, FL, and the photos are magical.

Victoria chose the Luca gown by All Who Wander, and she added a delicate custom strap and neckline detail during alterations. We can’t imagine anyone looking more gorgeous in this gown. Victoria and Grant, we are so happy for you and wish you a lifetime full of love and happiness! 🤍

REAL WEDDING WEDNESDAY | Faith + Adam 🤍

Our beautiful Faith and her husband Adam tied the knot at the Butterfly Pavilion in Acworth, GA, which provided the perfect backdrop for the one and only Jardin wedding dress by ! We have received more inquiries on this gown than any other, and we can’t imagine anyone doing it better justice than our Faith. She accessorized it with a gorgeous gold veil by and custom sneakers to match Adam’s.

These first look photos are some of the sweetest we’ve ever seen. 🤍🥹 In fact, Faith and Adam’s love-filled celebration featured so many gorgeous photos that we have to split it into two posts, so stay tuned...

Today would have been Dr. Martin Luther King's 95th birthday. And today, our feeds will be filled with his words, primarily taken from his "I Have a Dream" speech.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​But we must remember Dr. King as a man not just of words, but of action (as he put it in his letter from the Birmingham jail, "nonviolent direct action"). As an organization that is less than a mile from Dr. King's birthplace and final resting place, and one that is committed to advancing the rights of women and children, we feel a particular responsibility to take action today.

This morning, we made donations to Black Mamas Matter Alliance and the Alabama Prison Birth Project , both of which seek to improve infant/maternal health outcomes and support women of color. There are so many ways to take action in the spirit of Dr. King, but supporting the groups that are carrying on his legacy is the best way that we know how.

We also donated to the Legacy Museum. Today, they are offering free admission to all, so if you are in or near Montgomery, it is a good day to visit.

It is only because of all of YOU, our wonderful clients, that we are able to make these donations. We love and appreciate each and every one of you.

REAL WEDDING WEDNESDAY | Anna and Devin 🤍

We’ve had these stunning photos of our precious client Anna saved for a few weeks, and we are so excited to finally share them! Anna and Devin had an intimate outdoor wedding with their closest loved ones at Wildflower 301 in Greensboro, GA and it could not have been a more heartfelt and joyful event.

Anna looked like a queen in the classic Octavia gown by Jenny Yoo, which she accessorized with a pearl capelet from yours truly. And her hair was styled to perfection by our friend from our neighbor .atl

Anna is special to us for so many reasons, one of which is that she was only our THIRD appointment ever and the second person to buy a gown from us! Anna quickly became a friend, and we think these pictures will show you why. She has a gorgeous, kind, and loving soul.

We love you, Anna. Thank you for trusting us and allowing us to be a part of your day. We wish you and Devin a lifetime of love and joy! 🤍

REAL WEDDING WEDNESDAY | Liz & Ryan​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​This post has been a *long* time coming because Liz was one of the first ADIJ clients to get married, but I think you'll agree that it was worth the wait! Liz and Ryan got married in May at a gorgeous ranch in Colorado.

Liz could not have been more beautiful in the Spruce gown by , accented with a sweet belt by . At her appointment, one of her friends pulled this dress and insisted that she try it on, and she knew right away that it was the perfect fit for her. Friends often know best!

REAL WEDDING WEDNESDAY | Kate! ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Wednesday is our favorite day of the week because we get to share photos from our clients' weddings! Our wonderful bride Kate got married a few weeks ago in a small, family-only destination wedding in Puerto Rico. She was stunning in her form-fitting lace gown by Nicole Spose , which she topped off with a Lazaro veil. (If you know our seamstress Noura, then you know she loves bling, and this veil was Noura's favorite veil ever!)

Kate was not only a beautiful bride, but she is also a delightful person. We all had such a great time at her appointments, especially her alterations appointments. Kate, we are going to miss you, but we are so happy for you! We wish you a lifetime of love and happiness!
