Thiess Shucking Service saves shells from all our jobs to help future oyster replenishment and to promote bay health. We worked this past weekend with the folks at the York County History Center to ensure all shells from their annual Oyster Festival were recycled.

Congratulations to the UMCES Horn Point Oyster Hatchery crew and our team of dedicated partners on producing and deploying over 500 million spat-on-shell to Chesapeake Bay restoration sites for the 2023 season!! Many thanks to the Oyster Recovery Partnership, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the awesome HPL Hatchery team for helping make this milestone happen. Eat catfish… oh yah & OYSTERS

Did you know that according to state officials, 75% of the total fish biomass in some Chesapeake tributaries is made up of catfish? Catfish proved astoundingly adaptable, tolerating the bay’s saltier reaches to enter its freshwater tributaries and have now taken over special habitats which endanger many key species, including oysters. So today, on (and every day after, for that matter), EAT catfish to help reduce the detrimental changes they are making to the Chesapeake Bay food web.
