Meredith Willson’s all-American favorite follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian. Does he stay? Does he run with the money? Even if you know, you’ll still want to see the quirky characters of this Golden Era classic and hear the award winning songs that have long become American standards: “76 Trombones,” “Till there Was You” and “Trouble.”

event info: If your looking for some outdoor entertainment, come see the Striving Artists as they present their second annual Shakespeare in the Park production, Twelfth Night. After the success of last year's Much Ado About Nothing, SAC has once again produced a free outdoor series of performances throughout eastern Mass. Twelfth Night will be performed from July 22nd-July 31st at parks all across Massachusetts, including Lynch Park in Beverly, Heritage Park in Fall River, The Willows in Salem, and Borderland State Park in Easton. Admission is free (although donations are encouraged), and the locations are so lovely that we recommend making a day of it, taking in the scenery, having a picnic, and enjoying an afternoon of entertainment. event: Maudslay State Park's The Flies

Produced by Doug Hill and Directed by Anne Lucas, the first Act will feature the greatest tunes of Rodgers and Hart many of which have become jazz standards including songs like Blue Moon, My Funny Valentine, The Lady is Tramp, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, Manhattan and The Sweetest Sounds. In the second Act you will hear favorites of the highly successful shows that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together includling classics like: Carousel, State Fair, South Pacific, Flower Drum Song, The King And I, The Sound Of Music, and Cinderella. Their work was revolutionary to the Broadway stage, because they wrote the first story driven, character centered musicals. The beauty of these songs has never been surpassed in the musical theatre. Snowed in overnight at a middle-America airport, college lovers Elena Carson and Reed McAllister have an unexpected and life-altering reunion. Elena has stayed true to her hippie-ish, counter-culture path, while Reed has gone predictably corporate and conservative. As the night gives way to laughter, banter, remembrance and alcohol, Elena and Reed revisit a past that holds more surprises than they imagined—and a present that neither of them could have predicted.The production runs from August 3 to Sunday August 14 at the STC Theater, 90 Lafayette Street in Salem.
