10/17/2024

We are so excited to be hosting WSU Alum, Dr. Matthew Warner, as this years guest artist for the Wright State Saxophone Festival! Dr. Warner enjoys a multifaceted career as a music educator, saxophonist/woodwind doubler, conductor, and composer/arranger based in Cincinnati, Ohio. He currently serves as Band and Orchestra Director at Rapid Run Middle School and Adjunct Instructor of Saxophone at Sinclair Community College, and is often selected as a guest artist/clinician for schools and workshops. A Dayton, Ohio native, he earned the BM in Music Education and MH in Music from Wright State University, and the DMA in Music Education from Boston University.

The WSU Saxophone Studio commissioned Dr. Warner to compose an interactive piece of music that is accessible to all abilities. His composition, The Feast of Oberon: A Masque for Saxophones, imagines a royal court festival hosted by Oberon, King of the Fairies. Each movement is inspired by characters or vignettes from the various mythologies surrounding Oberon, such as Titania, Merlin, Puck, and The Magic Cup. In this way, the concert resembles a Renaissance-era masque, with each movement/ensemble taking on the role of a character or depicting a scene. Different styles portray the various vignettes, including renaissance folk music, baroque fugue, early modern saxophone quartet music, vaudeville, and romantic chamber music. In addition to telling a story, Warner wanted to ensure that everyone had a meaningful voice in the story. This meant creating parts that were practical, interesting, and enjoyable for performers at all ability levels, from beginner to advanced. In a way, this mirrors the concept of a royal court festival, where the celebration is for everyone!
