UPDATE 1/26/24 - It has been about four and a half months since the partial collapse of our building in Eastern Market. With everything that has been happening in the world, it’s been so hard to ask for help. Even though we sadly seem to still be in the same place since our last update, here we are nonetheless. We are still closed and have no expected date or idea of when we will be able to re-open. All income generation ceased the moment the wall came down and has left some of our amazing staff members without long-term work. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to supply our staff with funds to help get them through these trying times.
We are currently waiting for inspections to conclude to determine the cause of the collapse and for DTE to finish the work on the power line relocation before any work can begin on repairs. Unfortunately, this process is out of our control and continues to push the timeline forward. Having no idea or concept of what the timeline looks like is extremely frustrating as the costs continue to pile up.
The lapse and loss of business have been detrimental to our woman-owned, small business. At this point, insurance will only cover the first weekend of us being out of business and a small amount for the supplies that need to be replaced, including, but not limited to, furniture, electronics, and more. In addition to the collapse, we experienced break-ins, theft, and destruction of property - not to mention the space being open to the elements for an extended period of time.
As you have all shown an outpouring of support, we wanted to provide you with an update and thank you again for all the impact you have made on our team, personally and financially. Countless individuals shared kind words and memories and offered their resources and monetary donations.
We are truly blessed for the community around us. We are also forever grateful for all of the local organizations who have offered support to not only us but all of the small businesses that were affected. We send our gratitude and thanks to the Michigan Black Business Alliance, Detroit Economic Growth Council, Eastern Market Corporation, and the Mayor’s office for your support and generosity. There are numerous ways you can continue to support us through this challenging time that we’ve shared below.
--DONATE HERE: As we now know, insurance will pay very little to help recover the loss of business income and existing financial obligations including loans that got us through COVID. Until the loft can operate once again, all streams of revenue will cease. As a local woman-owned business, this will have devastating effects that we may not be able to recover from financially. Our event managers, Lauren and Heather Van Haaren, are also experiencing a sudden and unexpected loss in income for an unknown period of time. They have been the heart and soul of building such a successful space for the community.
--PURCHASE PRODUCT: j’adore Detroit will provide 25 percent of all product sales to support our staff as a means to help offset the loss of wages and commissions. The remaining profit from product sales will support the company directly as it navigates ways to recover from the abrupt and unexpected halt to business operations.
--ADVERTISE WITH BROOKLYN OUTDOOR: Brooklyn Outdoor offers various outdoor advertising products in Detroit, including bus shelter advertising, mogo bike share panel advertising, digital advertising on Huntington Place, hand-painted murals, the Detroit people mover, wall signs, and more. If you own a local business or know of a local business that purchases billboards or would like to advertise their business, please reach out to Lauren Van Haaren - [email redacted] - any sales would help offset the loss of event business.
--SHARE YOUR MOMENTS: We invite you to visit on Instagram and explore the "memories" highlight reel to witness the profound impact j'adore Detroit has had on the community. Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the future of the building, we refuse to lose hope. Being reminded of the special moments shared in the space provides light in the dark.
--SHARE US with your friends and family: By sharing social media pages and how the community can help, sharing news articles, and continuing to band together with the businesses that are impacted, the community's support is heard. Together, we can make a difference and help restore the vibrancy and vitality of Eastern Market's cherished businesses.
