Hello JD Fam - It has been almost 10 months now since the partial collapse of our building. The most frustrating part of all of this is that we STILL have no updates on the status of our space. It is as if we are in the same exact place as we were on that day. It doesn't seem like anyone is willing to help move this forward or listen to us as a small business and because of that, our insurance company is at a standstill. The second the wall collapsed, we were out of business and have no idea IF OR WHEN we will be able to operate in our space again. We continue to have outstanding bills coming in from the landlord, debts from the refunds and those that existed prior to the collapse, COVID loans, and additional obligations expected of us if we are or are not able to reopen.

We are losing hope in "the system", but just keep pushing onward - wherever that may be at this point; however, we are not ready to give up yet. We have worked too hard to build our community and business to just let it go.

We do still have our signature detroit rose candles and our signature sfumato fragrance available for purchase on our website if you would like to support us there. Please keep the positive thoughts going and thank you so much for the support and thoughts you have surrounded us with both then and now.

Hopefully next time we write we will have something positive to share...

Until then friends
xo

We are seeing so much excitement for the upcoming NFL draft and can’t help but have mixed emotions. On one hand, I feel immense pride and joy in my heart for all the businesses celebrating huge financial wins, dream partnerships coming to fruition, all the connections being made…. the list goes on… the city is electric.

On the other hand… we were to be doing the same….making these same life changing connections and partnerships …we were in a place to accept this influx of business with grace and ease. Heather and Lauren Van Haaren were dialed in - the sky was the limit and we… were… there. You know when you can feel the energy in the air where things have clicked and you can just put your foot on the gas? We do.

The rug was quite literally pulled out from under us when the wall of the building failed and crumbled to the ground back in September of last year. We haven’t updated our go fund me because we are quite literally in the exact same place as we were that day in September. No idea of what is to come and when. We sit here and we wait… we wait for insurance investigations… and we receive bill after bill for the inconceivable… and red tape. Massive amounts of red tape and back again. We wait and we watch what we could have had and know without a doubt we would have been experiencing at this very moment… that same palpable energy and excitement as our friends and business owners in the community.

We desperately want to welcome the big brands and the visitors to the city we love so deeply. To show them who we are. We wanted to introduce them to our talent and our artists. We wanted them to feel the passion and fire we have in our hearts for Detroit in a space that was created by the community. They won’t see that. We don’t know if we will ever get to see that.

It’s been seven months. Seven months since we had to make refund after refund. Seven months with no income. Seven months with no work for our staff members in Detroit. Seven months of feeling helpless and hopeless. Seven months is a long time…

We are counting on our friends to show Detroit off. We believe in you and we will be there to cheer you on and share all the amazing things you’ll be doing in a few short weeks.

I want to personally thank Eastern Market Partnership and the Metro-Detroit Black Business Alliance for being such huge supporters and amplifying our voices from the moment our building in Eastern Market collapsed through today. There is such a huge gap in support for small businesses facing crisis in a city that counts on small business to thrive. I am just beyond appreciative. UPDATE 1/26/24 - It has been about four and a half months since the partial collapse of our building in Eastern Market. With everything that has been happening in the world, it’s been so hard to ask for help. Even though we sadly seem to still be in the same place since our last update, here we are nonetheless. We are still closed and have no expected date or idea of when we will be able to re-open. All income generation ceased the moment the wall came down and has left some of our amazing staff members without long-term work. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to supply our staff with funds to help get them through these trying times.

We are currently waiting for inspections to conclude to determine the cause of the collapse and for DTE to finish the work on the power line relocation before any work can begin on repairs. Unfortunately, this process is out of our control and continues to push the timeline forward. Having no idea or concept of what the timeline looks like is extremely frustrating as the costs continue to pile up.

The lapse and loss of business have been detrimental to our woman-owned, small business. At this point, insurance will only cover the first weekend of us being out of business and a small amount for the supplies that need to be replaced, including, but not limited to, furniture, electronics, and more. In addition to the collapse, we experienced break-ins, theft, and destruction of property - not to mention the space being open to the elements for an extended period of time.

As you have all shown an outpouring of support, we wanted to provide you with an update and thank you again for all the impact you have made on our team, personally and financially. Countless individuals shared kind words and memories and offered their resources and monetary donations.

We are truly blessed for the community around us. We are also forever grateful for all of the local organizations who have offered support to not only us but all of the small businesses that were affected. We send our gratitude and thanks to the Michigan Black Business Alliance, Detroit Economic Growth Council, Eastern Market Corporation, and the Mayor’s office for your support and generosity. There are numerous ways you can continue to support us through this challenging time that we’ve shared below.

--DONATE HERE: As we now know, insurance will pay very little to help recover the loss of business income and existing financial obligations including loans that got us through COVID. Until the loft can operate once again, all streams of revenue will cease. As a local woman-owned business, this will have devastating effects that we may not be able to recover from financially. Our event managers, Lauren and Heather Van Haaren, are also experiencing a sudden and unexpected loss in income for an unknown period of time. They have been the heart and soul of building such a successful space for the community.

--PURCHASE PRODUCT: j’adore Detroit will provide 25 percent of all product sales to support our staff as a means to help offset the loss of wages and commissions. The remaining profit from product sales will support the company directly as it navigates ways to recover from the abrupt and unexpected halt to business operations.

--ADVERTISE WITH BROOKLYN OUTDOOR: Brooklyn Outdoor offers various outdoor advertising products in Detroit, including bus shelter advertising, mogo bike share panel advertising, digital advertising on Huntington Place, hand-painted murals, the Detroit people mover, wall signs, and more. If you own a local business or know of a local business that purchases billboards or would like to advertise their business, please reach out to Lauren Van Haaren - [email redacted] - any sales would help offset the loss of event business.

--SHARE YOUR MOMENTS: We invite you to visit on Instagram and explore the "memories" highlight reel to witness the profound impact j'adore Detroit has had on the community. Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the future of the building, we refuse to lose hope. Being reminded of the special moments shared in the space provides light in the dark.

--SHARE US with your friends and family: By sharing social media pages and how the community can help, sharing news articles, and continuing to band together with the businesses that are impacted, the community's support is heard. Together, we can make a difference and help restore the vibrancy and vitality of Eastern Market's cherished businesses.

To everyone who has donated and supported us in this journey so far, words cannot express how grateful we are for the outpouring of support and the kind words that have moved us all to tears. We are in awe, have found comfort in your generosity, and are forever grateful!

Update - on Friday, September 23rd, there was an appeal hearing to determine whether or not the building would be demolished due to the emergency order. Thanks to the support of many local and national organizations including, but not limited to, the Michigan Black Business Alliance, Detroit Economic Growth Council, Eastern Market Corporation, and the Mayor Duggan's Office, the emergency demolition order has been placed on hold.

The building owner is responsible for having structural engineers evaluate the safety of the building and determine what structural repairs are needed and submit that plan to the building and safety department for approval. We hope to receive an update soon, but we don’t have information about when an inspection will occur or conclude.

This update is the greatest hope we have received! Although there is still much uncertainty about a timeline and whether or not the building can be repaired, we are holding onto faith that we will once again be able to operate in our beautiful space.

We will receive little financial support through insurance until there has been a final determination of the status of the building, leaving us in a state of uncertainty and facing significant financial challenges.

Many of you kindly asked how you can support us during these difficult times. We are working diligently to recoup losses internally but are leaning on the community for support. Below are several ways you can help:

--DONATE HERE: As we now know, insurance will pay very little to help recover the loss of business income and existing financial obligations including loans that got us through COVID. As you may or may not have heard the unfortunate news, there was an issue with the infrastructure of the building in which we operate that caused the wall on the side of our building to collapse on Saturday at approximately 11:45 a.m.

We are incredibly thankful that none of our clients or staff were in the building when the incident occurred. Our first and foremost concern has always been to provide our clients with a safe environment to celebrate with family and friends. The failure of the structure is an unforeseeable and unimaginable event.

There is currently an emergency demolition order for the building, so the outlook for j'adore Detroit as a business and for our staff doesn't look good.

We appreciate all of your support, understanding, and kind words.

Sincerely, Candice and j'adore Detroit team ❤️

We’re selective when it comes to who we work with — we’ve designed these products down to every detail with brands we love, brands we swear by, and brands that are fueled by a bigger mission that we can’t help but get behind.  Be on the lookout for more j’adore Detroit exclusives coming s...
