Leading up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we will sit down with Dr. Otovo, Florida International University Assistant Professor of History, to discuss her new book, Progressive Mothers, Better Babies: Race, Public Health, and the State in Brazil (University of Texas Press, 2016). Dr. Otovo's work around motherhood and the Black body ignites conversation about gender, poverty, and Brazilian racial history. This discussion will give us the opportunity to shed light on larger debates about Brazil’s past, present, and future.
