Did you know that your leach field can get over saturated? Your leach field drains the waste water back into the ground to be filtered. Sometimes, your leach field can become flooded - usually after heavy rain or excessive water usage. This can cause water to back up into your home. When this happens, the best thing to do is limit your water usage, such as: take shorter showers, do laundry over a few days rather than all at one time, do dishes every few days rather than every day. Having your septic tank pumped could help get rid of some water, however the problem will persist if steps are not taken to limit water usage. Did you know, it is important to do routine inspections on your septic system. We recommend taking these steps: (1) examine the ground around your tank once per week to make sure there is no leakage, (2) examine your leech field monthly to ensure there is no leakage (3) (if you can) open the lids once per year to make sure everything is in working order, (4) have your septic tank professionally pumped every 3-5 years dependent upon how many people live in the household, (5) have your leech field professionally treated every 15-20 years. Did you know that your septic system affects your groundwater? The liquid waste that leeches out of your septic tank leads out to a drain field (sometimes called a leech field). Once it gets here, it makes its way through the soil, where it filters out any harmful bacteria and waste. Once it filters through the soil, it goes down into the groundwater. Putting harmful chemicals, cooking grease, motor oil, etc. into your septic system doesn't allow the soil to filter the water properly and can cause contamination to your ground water. Routine maintenance can help prevent contamination and keep your septic system running smoothly.

It is Septic Fact Friday! Here at Ben Toilet Rentals, we tell you what other companies won't.
Some septic tanks may look a little bit different than what you're used to. This one in particular has what we call "coffin lids" because of their shape, and because if you try to lift one up you could hurt yourself. The weight of these lids makes them extremely difficult to lift. If order to service septic tanks with these lids, a 6 inch wide trench must be dug around the lid on 3 sides so that we can slide the lid over rather than lift it up. Do you know what your whole septic system looks like? Well, now you do! It starts in your home! Every toilet, sink, shower, washing machine, and drain leads down to your septic tank. Whenever you flush, rinse, etc. the waste then flows out of your house and through a pipe that leads to your septic tank. Once your tank fills up with water, any excess water and broken down waste will flow out of your outlet pipe and to a leach field or drain field. Here, the waste water gets absorbed into the ground where it gets purified through the soil and goes down into the groundwater. If any one of these steps is not functioning properly, your whole system could get backed up. Did you know that almost all septic tanks have two lids? Sometimes, they may look like one of these two. The first picture is what we call "riser lids" which provide easy access to your septic tank. The second picture is an example of concrete lids that are
underground, which must be dug out for access. Make sure that both lids are accessible, so that your septic driver can adequately service your septic system.
