July wedding legalities from Vows by Valerie - Wedding Officiant

July, we celebrate America’s freedom and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence which provides the legal and governmental framework for the United States. This is a good month to talk about the legalities of marriages in Ohio.

Although not romantic, a marriage is a verbal contract between the couple and the state. The state is a party to the contract because, under its laws, the couple has certain obligations and responsibilities to each other, children, and to Ohio.

The “contract” is the marriage license which can be obtained at the county in which, at least, one member of the couple lives. The marriage license is valid for 60 days from issuance and the officiant has 30 days after the solemnizing the marriage to return to the court. (see county Probate court phone numbers below)

It is important to make sure the officiant you choose is registered with the Ohio Secretary of State. In addition, the marriage ceremony must have a "Declaration of Intent" and "Pronouncement" to fulfill legal requirements.

Whether a Simply “I do” or a big celebration hiring a professional will ensure all your marriage legalities are met. A good officiant (pick me!) will cover the legalities with elegance and grace through thoughtful wording of your ceremony.

If July graces you with a proposal, I would love to be considered as your wedding officiant.

June Wedding talk from Vows by Valerie - Wedding Officiant

June marks summertime. Gardens are growing and colorful blooms are everywhere. Let’s talk bouquets!

History tells us the original reason a bride carried florals was to ward off evil spirits and bad luck, along with the beautiful fragrance.

Any size wedding can incorporate flowers. DIY bouquets, large and small, can provide a bright and elegant design for a wedding day.

To make a bouquet – think seasonal. Look around your garden (or a friends!) and see what is blooming. Farmers markets and local florists are a great local source for flowers. Consider how you want the bouquet to look: tight or a bit more whimsical, such as cascading bouquet.

Once you have your flowers, strip the leaves off the bottom half of the stems and snip to desired size. Arrange your bouquet! I find arranging in a vase to get the desired look is helpful.

Last step add ribbon, bows, jewels or even a blue flower for your something blue!

Place your bouquet in water until it is time to say “I do”.

May Wedding talk from Vows by Valerie - Wedding Officiant

I was married 13 years ago, saying “I do” in a pair of jeans, in a gazebo in the woods, my dogs acting as best man and maid of honor. My ceremony was intimate consisting of me, my husband and our wedding officiant. Whenever I think of my wedding ceremony, I smile. The officiant’s simple, elegant ceremony made my wedding day memorable. Although I can’t remember every word said, I can remember the way I felt. My small, easy ceremony was fitting for me and my husband.

Perhaps, like my wedding, a Simply “I do” is for you. Just the three of us capturing your vow and commitment. People need to get married for a myriad of reasons. Life events happen in which a marriage may need to be expedited or spontaneous. That’s where I come in. I am here. I am local.

The best part of an elopement – they can take place anywhere! Walking my dog around Brunswick Lake, my eyes are regularly drawn to various locations which offer a breathtaking view to simply say “I do”.

April wedding fun from Vows by Valerie - Wedding Officiant

April is notorious for showers, but don’t let rain ruin your wedding day!

Thanks to Hindu tradition, rain on your wedding day is lucky. A wet knot is very challenging to untie; therefore “tying the knot” on a rainy day signifies your marriage will not unravel.

Whether in your own backyard or an elaborate venue, feeling prepared can ease wedding day stress.

Tips:
• Ensure that your venue has an indoor/covered option
• Home based weddings, have inside ceremony and seating plan prepared
• Have umbrellas on standby, even if just walking across a sidewalk!
• Account extra time for travel, photos and guests to arrive
• Use the weather as reason to cuddle up – makes for romantic for wedding day photos!

Sunshine or raindrops, embrace the weather! The true reason you’re getting married is because you love each other and want to celebrate that love with family and friends.

If April graces you with a proposal, I propose to be considered as your wedding officiant!

March Wedding fun from Vows by Valerie - Wedding Officiant

Weddings are filled with tradition. One of the oldest, based on an Old English rhyme dating back to 19th-century Lancashire, refers to things a bride should have on her wedding day.

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”

Whether an elopement or big celebration, here are ways to incorporate this tradition into your wedding day:

Something old: represents a tie to the past.

Consider an old love song as your wedding day track

Something new: signifies hope and optimism for the future.

This one can be free with your new name – let your wedding day be the first time you write out your new name! Sign a wedding invite or special stationery and frame it. How cute!

Something borrowed: borrow from a happily married friend or relative; the tradition is the happiness will transfer over and remain with the couple for years to come.

Borrow a hair accessory! Think clips, hairpins, ribbons, even a simple bobby pin placed anywhere.
*Start a new ritual with friends where everyone wears the piece on their wedding day.

Something blue: deemed the color of love, purity and faithfulness.

SHOES! heels, sandals, tennis shoes, slippers or simply paint your toes blue!

*Sixpence in her shoe was left off intentionally, but feel free to put one in your blue shoe!

If March graces you with a proposal, I would love to be considered as your wedding officiant.
