Terra Madre - An evening with Beppe Gambetta

Terra Madre is a musical key to open a world of tales and dreams related to the motherlands of infinite possible itineraries, and to the cries of pain and hope that rise from them.

*****

Beppe Gambetta is a guitarist, vocalist, researcher and composer born in Genova, Italy who developed a style of concert presentation that brings American and European Roots to speak together with one voice. In his unique approach, Gambetta blends energetic grooves with passionate melodies, giving new life to sources from different times, periods and places. In addition, the original music he composes gives contemporary influences to traditional roots music.

Beppe will be playing songs from this new album, as well as other beautiful tunes.

Seating for this event is limited! To purchase tickets, please follow link in bio.

Simply put, he loves these wines and can’t wait to share them with you. Hermon Mehari and Alessandro Lanzoni "Arc Fiction"🎺🎹

*****

The songs on Arc Fiction often musically blur the lines between what is written and what is not. For the listener, what differentiates the free improvisation from the preconceived compositions is often impossible to distinguish. This is intentional, but not in an overtly “blinding” manner: the composed elements serve as points of stable ground in the midst of all the looser, more spontaneous structures.

The beauty comes from just how much the improvised moments feel like compositions, how they, too, have intent, melodies, semblances of form, grooves established, clear beginnings and ends, etc. Lanzoni and Mehari follow the creative rules of child’s play—no limits, everything is game!—while always listening intently to each other, exchanging and overlaying, allowing each to take the lead when appropriate. The listener participates in the adventure, following the thread of each story as the music drives forever forward, gaining momentum as it goes.

Laurence’s words perfectly capture what the 3/9-10 events will be about: his quest to understand the food of his Eastern European ancestors.

Repost from
My great grandmother was known for her knishes. My dad told me how she would stretch the dough super thinly and spread it across the table, put the potato in and roll it up. They came out flaky, golden brown and most importantly - small!

In Ukraine and Moldova, I tried my best to find any kind of knish. What I found was called placinta, one of the most famous dishes in Moldova. Imagine a knish, but baked as the tube and not sliced. It was the exact same dough, same filling, same golden brown, just not individually portioned. When on a Jewish Genealogy website for Bessarabian Jews I found many knish recipes that were uncut, often in figure 8 shapes. Very close to the Placinta, but different than my great grandmother’s. I needed to find a recipe for ones that were cut.

We hired a tour guide to take us to the North of Moldova, to the shtetl where she came from, and the entire car ride I picked our host’s brain about Jewish Moldovan food. When I described what my Dad told me, she knew exactly what I was talking about! She said they were called “Knishke”, the diminutive form of Knish in Yiddish! She described them to me exactly how my Dad did.

Google results gave me nothing for Knishke, but that’s when I realized that I was searching in the wrong language. What I should be looking for is кнышики ! (thank god for 2 semesters of Russian) Even though we were in Moldova, where a variant of Romanian is spoken, the language of the area was Russian when my family lived there. Learning to look up Jewish recipes in Russian has helped me a ton with tracing dishes that I can’t find in English.

So anyways, here is a knishke inspired the small petit knishes made by Jews of Bessarabia - flaky layers of pastry brushed with oil, filled with potato and caramelized onion. Basically the greatest thing ever and something definitely worth the time and effort to keep around forever.

The first event of our 2024 Season features international fiddle favorite, Coleen Dieker. Her thirst for adventure infuses her many musical pursuits, and we’re preparing for an energetic and invigorating night of Irish music at Celtic Crossroads on February 27th at 7pm. Find a link to purchase tickets at the link in our bio and at ensembleiberica.org.

A student of music since she was a preschooler, Dieker () performs at a high level on various instruments: piano, guitar, flute, ukulele, and violin. She is also an accomplished composer and arranger, a gift she has employed in various roles, including as a music director.

Coleen works frequently with Ensemble Iberica, and has collaborated with Jessica Paige Music, Making Movies, Nick Marshall, The Steamboat Bandits, and Ayllu. She performs with Flannigan’s Right Hook, a high-energy rock/bluegrass/Celtic band. She also writes, records, and tours with acclaimed Jewish singer/songwriter Rabbi Josh Warshawsky.

No matter the endeavor, Dieker contributes more than music virtuosity. She delivers passion, enthusiasm, and a sense of adventure. Clint Ashlock, artistic director of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, once said of Dieker: “She is not afraid to assert her personality...She’s really one of the most brilliant individual musicians in our scene.”

Coleen lives a nomadic lifestyle traveling the globe and offers a variety of musical gifts: soulful song-leading with the guitar and piano, entertaining on electric violin, and elevating music with her dynamic fiddling. We’re lucky to have her as the featured artist kicking off our 2024 season.
