"Publick Universal Friend began to preach a message of universal friendship, speaking out against slavery and alcohol and urging everyone, even married couples, to refrain from s*x. A tall impressive figure with a strong voice, Friend had absolute faith in these beliefs. Friend’s sermons were reported on and published in newspapers, leading to fame and inspiring a following of well-educated men and women. Writers at the time still wondered if Friend was male or female, although the many people who listened to and followed Friend did not seem to care. "

CORN HUSK DOLL-MAKING AND DEMONSTRATIONS AT THE HHS MUSUEM THIS SUNDAY, 1-3PM
The Hurley Heritage Society Museum will be hosting a Corn Husk Doll Making and Demonstration this Sunday October 15 from 1-3pm in the front lawn of the museum. We will have demonstrators showing how to make them, and guests can also try their hands at making them as well. Children welcome! Free and open to the public (donations always welcome).

The history of the corn husk doll dates back to Native American craftsmanship. It is unknown when the practice of making corn husk dolls began among colonial peoples, however, we know that these dolls were made by European settlers, and enslaved African Americans. The looks and decorations of the dolls can vary greatly, despite similar techniques being used.

BURNING OF KINGSTON EVENT SPOTLIGHT
"Bitter Farewell: The Esopus Indian Experience in the American Revolution" - SATURDAY OCT 14th, 11am -
A Talk by Justin Wexler of Wild Hudson Valley - at Persen House
Location: Matthewis Persen House Museum

The three decades between 1755 and 1785 were a time of major upheaval for the native peoples of the Hudson Valley, culminating in a war that forced them out of their ancestral homeland. This presentation tells the dramatic story of the Esopus Indians and their neighbors during this turbulent period by weaving together an array of archival sources and little-known oral history.

This lecture is presented by Justin Wexler, an ethnoecologist who has spent over twenty years reconstructing the lifeways of Hudson Valley native peoples and connecting with their descendants in Ontario, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. He can be found teaching all over the region through his organization, Wild Hudson Valley, which strives to reconnect people with the earth by opening up our eyes to historic land stewardship practices.
